1. Feminism
Liberal feminism is the constant battle
of women against society and
tradition, women who seek equality
with men
Feminists have struggled with the
oppression of women through out
history.
2. Feminism… cont.
Virginia Woolf wrote Mrs. Dalloway in
the 1920s a time period which women
were not accepting the stereo typical
roles of women during pervious ages.
Women began to speak out, reach
out and do what ever possible with
what little power they had in order to
be heard.
3. Early Life
While Virginia Woolf grew up, she was
uneducated since at the time, it
seemed that it was unnecessary for
women to be educated. Due to her
father’s library, she read constantly
and gained some what education
through that.
4. Feminism in Mrs. Dalloway :
Time Period
The feminism portrayed in Mrs.
Dalloway by Virginia Woolf as
well as any of her other books is
a direct reaction her reaction to
the time period of which she
lived in.
5. Jane Austen
However she did go to college and
studied texts from Jane Austen,
amongst others whom influenced her
writing. For example, “A Room of
Ones Own” was appalled by the lack
of equality amongst women Jane
Austen wrote about.
6. Virginia Woolf felt oppressed by the
standards the role of woman had to fit
into. Women of her generation were
expected to reach a certain lifestyle,
and in Mrs. Dalloway she achieves
this lifestyle, but is troubled by it
throughout the book.
7. In Mrs. Dalloway, Virginia Woolf used
both feminine and masculine
characteristics in both male and
female characters in her book.
8. Mrs. Dalloway
Virginia Woolf believes that there
between men and women there must
be a differentiating factor, that sets
one apart from the other. In her point
of view she believes that the writing
that comes from a woman writer
could not come from a men, but only
stem from a woman.
