Hospitality Management Offers Well Rounded Education Required For Number of Positions Managing a hotel or resort requires a range of departments coming together to ensure that guests are happy, the hotel is well marketed, the premises are clean and there is always a friendly face waiting for guests upon arrival. As such, areas of management include: general management, human resources management, sales and marketing management, housekeeping management, food and beverage management, financial management as well as catering and convention management. Centennial College offers a single program that provides the range of hotel management education required for students to be able to apply for positions in any of these areas upon graduation. Hospitality Management – Hotel and Resort is facilitated through the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culture, which teaches students skills that are transferable anywhere in Canada and is based at Progress Campus. This location is Centennial College’s largest campus and boasts facilities that help students in their studies. For example, Hotel and Resort students benefit from the use of a full-service conference centre that is a “living lab” designed to provide students with hands-on experience, and gives them a chance to hone their skills within a fully functional facility under the supervision of industry professionals, both culinary and administrative. The curriculum of the two-year offering, meanwhile, ensures that students gain an understanding of the interrelationships between departments that drive performance in the hotel and resort industry. As such, students attend courses that include Front Office Operations (examines the various elements of effective front office management, paying close attention to planning, forecasting and evaluating front office procedures. Front Office procedures, guest relations and satisfaction, communications with the other hotel departments are placed within the context of the overall operation of a hotel); Hospitality and Tourism Marketing (students define marketing, distinguish between product and services marketing and demonstrate an understanding of consumer behavior, market segmentation, the marketing mix and their application to the marketing plan); Housekeeping and Facilities Management (gives students insight into the two primary areas that need to be managed well to operate successfully: physical planning and housekeeping operations of the building. Students come to understand why monitoring heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems to offer guest comfort and reduce costs is important; the importance of cleanliness and systems for operating; and department organization, job descriptions, inventories, and budgets for these related departments); and more. The Hotel and Resort program is proof that a hotel management degree is not necessary to obtain a worthwhile education that will equip you a range of careers that you can switch at any time.
