An electronics engineering diploma appears to lead graduates in some obvious
directions, for example, to electronics industry. However, the scope of this program is not
limited to just electronics industry. Rather, job opportunities exist in various industries
outside it, such as aerospace, automotive, marine, telecoms, utilities, construction,
defense, pharmaceuticals, oil and gas, power generation, and any other industry that relies
on electronics devices or equipment.
This means that the skilled electronics engineering technicians are in great demand in both
the electronics industry and outside it. This also means that electronics engineering
graduates will have better chances of finding employment. Moreover, the overall demand
for them is expected to rise in the coming years because of the increased dependence on
electronics devices, in residential as well as commercial settings.
Nature of Work
Electronics engineering professionals rely heavily on the principles of mathematics,
electronics and data communications. They may be engaged in installing,
maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing or selling of electronics equipment,
devices and systems. The work is performed more often either at the client site or
in the manufacturing unit.
The professionals are not only involved in maintenance and repairing of electrical
and electronic devices, but they are also skilled to be involved in various aspects
of design and development, testing and manufacturing. Their exact roles and
responsibilities depend upon the company they work with.
Electronics engineering professionals are expected to possess technical expertise in the
areas of wireless communications, microcontrollers, data communications, industrial
systems, communication transceivers, computer hardware and networks, RF transmission
and measurements, and electronic communication systems.
Additionally, they must be well-versed in electronics shop practices, technical writing in MS
Office, ethics in technology and environment, measurement and instrumentation, and
quality control techniques. Communication skills also play a critical role in case they are
employed with a sales firm or a customer service organization.
Acquiring Knowledge and Skills
In order to work in the organized sector, the individuals need to undergo a formal post-
secondary education and training in electronics engineers. Employers are keen on hiring
only those professionals who have completed their electronics engineering education and
possess practical hands-on experience.
