  3. 3. <ul><li>1.- HISTORICAL PRECEDENTS DESPITE ITS LONGEVITY, SIMILAR CONSTRUCTIONS TO THE HANGING BRIDGE CAN BE FOUND DATING BACK TO THE 16th CENTURY. THESE BRIDGES WERE USED TO CROSS WIDE-SPAN RIVERS AND ESTUARIES ALL OVER EUROPE. </li></ul>
  4. 4. 2.- DRAFTS AND PLANS <ul><li>DESIGN REQUIREMENTS: </li></ul><ul><li>ABILITY TO FERRY BOTH CARGO AND PASSENGERS. </li></ul><ul><li>NO INTERRUPTION OF RIVER TRAFFIC. </li></ul><ul><li>REASONABLE CONSTRUCTION COSTS. </li></ul>
  5. 5. 3.- THE PROJECT (1) <ul><li>THE PROJECT CONSISTS ON: </li></ul><ul><li>TWO HORIZONTAL IRON CROSSBEAMS RESTING ON FOUR LATTICEWORK TOWERS ANCHORED IN THE PIERS EITHER SIDE OF THE RIVER. </li></ul><ul><li>THE PASSENGER AND CARGO PLATFORM, OR GONDOLA, IS SUSPENDED FROM A TRAVELER THAT RUNS ALONG THE TRACK PROVIDED BY THE CROSSBARS. </li></ul>
  6. 6. 4.- THE PROJECT (2) <ul><li>THE TOWERS WERE 43 METRES HIGH. </li></ul><ul><li>THE FOUNDATIONS WERE 10 METERS DEEP. </li></ul><ul><li>THE ORIGINAL GONDOLA MEASURED 10 x 5 METERS. </li></ul>
  7. 7. 5.- THE CONSTRUCTION WORK <ul><li>CONSTRUCTION STARTED ON APRIL 10th 1890 ON THE PORTUGALETE BANK. </li></ul><ul><li>ALL THE DIFFERENT PARTS WERE INITIALLY ASSEMBLED WITH BOLTS, BUT FINALLY, RIVETS WERE EMPLOYED. </li></ul><ul><li>THE MOST COMPLEX PART OF THE BUILDING PROCESS CONSISTED ON THE COLLOCATION OF THE CROSSBARS THAT SPAN THE RIVER. </li></ul><ul><li>OFICIAL INAGURATION WAS ON JULY 28th 1893. </li></ul>

(PARADOXICALLY, THE WAR ENDS THREE DAYS LATER ON JUNE 22nd.) </li></ul>
  10. 10. 8.- REPAIRING THE BRIDGE <ul><li>THE MOST IMPORTANT SECTIONS CONCERNED WERE: </li></ul><ul><li>THE SUSPENSION SYSTEM </li></ul><ul><li>THE CROSSBAR TRACK. </li></ul><ul><li>THE TRAVELLER. </li></ul><ul><li>REINAGURATION DATE: JUNE 19th 1941. </li></ul>

  12. 12. 10.- ANECDOTES <ul><li>1912.- Mr. TEBAR (AN ACROBAT) TIED ONE END OF A ROPE TO THE BRIDGE AND THE OTHER ROUND HIS WAIST AND JUMPED OFF THE CROSSBAR. </li></ul><ul><li>AN OBSTINATE MAN CHOSE TO COMMIT SUICIDE BY JUMMPING OFF THE BRIDGE. (HE SUCCEEDED AT THE THIRD ATTEMPT) </li></ul><ul><li>1960’s.- A DRIVER DROVE ONTO THE GONDOLA AND ACCELERATED INSTEAD OF BRAKING, WITH DISASTROUS CONSEQUENCES: HIS BRAND-NEW CAR ENDED UP IN THE BOTTON OF THE RIVER. </li></ul>
