This group (generally older workers) have been unemployed who have been looking for jobs for more than six months is 45.9%, the highest in six decades.
© 2010 Succeed on Purpose, Inc. 27. 27. What Did You Base Your Initial Career Decision On?
© 2010 Succeed on Purpose, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
20
When Did that Change?
28. 28. Third Biggest Career Mistake
The third biggest mistake is that starting in Career Phase 2 (Growth), we make career decisions based on strengths, rather than purpose (passion).
Rewarded based on strengths
Shift from an internal reward system (passion) to an external reward system (corporate America)
© 2010 Succeed on Purpose, Inc. 29. 29. Purpose = Passion + Strengths
© 2009 Succeed on Purpose, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
22
My Strengths
My Purpose
My Passions
30. 30. WORK GROUP ACTIVITY
Write down 10 strengths. Strengths come from your mind. What are you good at? Personal/professional.
Rank them (and re-rank) with 1 being the best strength.
Second, write down 10 passions. Passions come from your heart. What do you LOVE doing? They can be personal and/or professional.
Rank them (and re-rank) with 1 being the most passion.
Circle words from both lists where you sense ENERGY. Energy can be felt, heard, sensed. Choose carefully.
Raise your hand when finished and a workshop leader will review your list and provide a draft (time permitting).
© 2010 Succeed on Purpose, Inc. 31. 31. Example:
STRENGTHS:
Strategic
Good Listener
Inspiring/Leading
Great Speaker
Marketing Expert
Passionate
Training Others
Make the Complex Simple
Writing
Fitness/Exercise
PASSIONS:
Inspiring People
Speaking/Training
Travel
Writing
Meditation/Prayer
Family
Great Food/Wine
Music
Leading Others
Beach
© 2010 Succeed on Purpose, Inc. 32. 32.
Circle words from both lists where there is ENERGY. Energy can be felt, heard, sensed. Choose carefully.
Raise your hand when finished and a workshop leader will review your list and provide a draft (time permitting).
© 2010 Succeed on Purpose, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
25
33. 33. ACTIVITY – PART 2:
Look at the strengths and passions, and “energy” words.
To develop a Purpose Statement draft, find one action verb that has the most energy from the list. If the same word is on both lists, that’s usually a pretty good indicator. (In the previous example, “inspiring” shows up on both lists, and has “energy” associated with it.) So the purpose statement begins with: “My purpose is to inspire…”
The next step is to ask “to what/whom?” So in this example, we’d ask “To inspire what?”
Begin to play around with the words, or ask for assistance.
Check final draft with workshop leader.
© 2010 Succeed on Purpose, Inc. 34. 34. Example:
STRENGTHS:
Strategic
Good Listener
Inspiring/Leading
Great Speaker
Marketing Expert
Passionate
Training Others
Make the Complex Simple
Writing
Fitness/Exercise
PASSIONS:
Inspiring People
Speaking/Training
Travel
Writing
Meditation/Prayer
Family
Great Food/Wine
Music
Leading Others
Beach
© 2010 Succeed on Purpose, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
27
35. 35. ACTIVITY – PART 2:
Look at strength, passions, and “energy” words.
Find one action verb with the most energy from the list.
Example: My purpose is TO INSPIRE…
Next ask, “To inspire what?”
Begin to play around with the words, or ask for assistance.
Check final draft with workshop leader.
© 2010 Succeed on Purpose, Inc. 36. 36. Succeed on Purpose in 2011
Market Perspectives and Career Phases
Third Biggest Career Path Mistake
Finding Your Purpose
Second Biggest Career Path Mistake
© 2010 Succeed on Purpose, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
29
37. 37. Second Biggest Career Mistake
We fear making any career course corrections (because we fear change)
Even though we’re designed to grow and prosper, we “settle” for a job that doesn’t fulfill us because we’re afraid to change
That fear debilitates us completely
We cycle through the same job(s) at different companies and don’t face the truth. This cycle damages our self-esteem
Passion is the career fuel, but we don’t have any!
© 2010 Succeed on Purpose, Inc. All Rights Reserved.
30
39. 39. THE Biggest Career Mistake
We don’t build a career plan to move from where we are to what we want
We put our career on auto pilot and wait for the companies to tell us what to do
We put ourselves at the mercy of our employers
Even though a career plan is easy to create… we don’t do it! We don’t take control for the most important part of our lives (other than our families)
This has devastating consequences to our happiness and our financial well being
© 2010 Succeed on Purpose, Inc.
