  1. 1. Haiti is the western third of the island of Hispaniola. The Haitians were inspired by the American Revolution Rare country that was owned by France Where in the world?
  2. 2. Haitian Culture Haiti had an incredibly large slave population. Wealthy colony due to the growth of SUGAR
  3. 3. Life was rough…. For the slaves, life was incredibly harsh. A. Beat frequently B. Poor living conditions
  4. 4. In 1791, a group of 100,000 slaves united to fight for freedom. They were led byToussaint L’Ouverture, a former slave. Slaves UNITE!
  5. 5. Within 10 years, L’Ouverture had freed the island from French control and freed all of the slaves. Victory! What was going on in France during this time period?
  6. 6. Unfortunately, in 1802, France sent soldiers to deal with the situation. L’Ouverture was caught and imprisoned in France where he died. Defeat?
  7. 7. The Finale In spite of his capture, with all that France was already dealing with, France was unable to defeat the rebellion even though they captured the leader.
  8. 8. Haiti declared its independence. It is the ONLY successful slave revolt in history. Unfortunately, today Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world and an earthquake destroyed much of the country a few years ago. The Rest of the story
