  2. 2. <ul><li>The form of Paradise Lost is classical, but its content is scriptural. </li></ul><ul><li>Milton wrote nothing for itself. </li></ul><ul><li>As he tells us in the Reason of Church Government , his aim was to write an epic which would be ‘doctrinal’ ‘exemplary’. </li></ul><ul><li>Therefore, he went to the Bible for his theme. </li></ul>

The Fall of Man: Various Interpretations <ul><li>Of Man’s first disobedience, and the fruit </li></ul><ul><li>Of that forbidden Tree, whose mortal taste </li></ul><ul><li>Brought death into the world and all our woe, </li></ul><ul><li>With loss of Eden, till one greater Man </li></ul><ul><li>Restore us, and regain the blissful seat , </li></ul><ul><li>Sing Heavenly Muse. </li></ul>
  4. 4. The causes of Eve’s Fall <ul><li>The question is what was root cause of the Fall. </li></ul><ul><li>Why did Adam and Eve transgress and disobey His Command. </li></ul>

  6. 6. The Causes of Adam’s Fall <ul><li>He is horrified at Eve’s transgression. He is aware of the terrible consequences which would follow, yet he can not forsake Eve: </li></ul><ul><li>“ How can I live without thee, how forgoe </li></ul><ul><li>The sweet Converse and Love so dearly joy’d. </li></ul><ul><li>To live again in these wilde Woods Forlorn” ? </li></ul>
