INTRODUCTION
• IN AUGUST 2019, GOOGLE ANNOUNCED A MAJOR RESTRUCTURING OF ITS WORKFORCE, RESULTING IN A MASS LAYOFF OF THOUSANDS OF EMPLOYEES.
• THE RESTRUCTURING WAS A RESULT OF A SHIFT IN THE COMPANY'S FOCUS FROM ITS CORE PRODUCTS TO NEW AREAS OF GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT.
• THIS RESTRUCTURING HAS HAD A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON THE LIVES OF MANY EMPLOYEES, AND THE COMPANY'S FUTURE DIRECTION .
• THIS PRESENTATION WILL PROVIDE AN OVERVIEW OF THE MASS LAYOFF, ITS CAUSES, AND ITS IMPLICATIONS FOR GOOGLE AND ITS EMPLOYEES.
• WE WILL ALSO DISCUSS THE COMPANY'S RESPONSE TO THE RESTRUCTURING, AND WHAT IT MEANS FOR THE FUTURE OF THE COMPANY AND ITS EMPLOYEES.

REASON FOR
LAYOFF
• THE MASS LAYOFF BY GOOGLE WAS CAUSED BY A SHIFT IN THE COMPANY'S FOCUS FROM ITS CORE PRODUCTS TO NEW AREAS OF GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT.
• THIS SHIFT WAS DRIVEN BY THE NEED TO REMAIN COMPETITIVE IN A RAPIDLY CHANGING TECHNOLOGICAL LANDSCAPE, AND TO MOVE AWAY FROM ITS TRADITIONAL RELIANCE ON ADVERTISING REVENUE .
• THE RESTRUCTURING WAS ALSO A RESPONSE TO THE INCREASING PRESSURE FROM THE GOVERNMENT TO BREAK UP THE COMPANY'S MONOPOLY ON CERTAIN MARKETS.
• THIS PRESSURE HAS RESULTED IN GOOGLE HAVING TO MAKE CHANGES TO ITS BUSINESS MODEL AND FOCUS ON AREAS OF GROWTH OUTSIDE OF ITS CORE PRODUCTS.

THE CAUSE OF MASS
LAYOFF
•THE MASS LAYOFF BY GOOGLE HAS HAD A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON THE LIVES OF MANY OF ITS EMPLOYEES.
• THOUSANDS OF EMPLOYEES HAVE BEEN LAID OFF, AND MANY MORE HAVE HAD THEIR ROLES CHANGED OR THEIR POSITIONS ELIMINATED. THIS HAS RESULTED IN A GREAT DEAL OF UNCERTAINTY FOR MANY EMPLOYEES, AS WELL AS A SENSE OF BETRAYAL BY THE
COMPANY .
•THE RESTRUCTURING HAS ALSO HAD AN IMPACT ON THE MORALE OF EMPLOYEES, AS MANY HAVE BECOME DISILLUSIONED WITH THE COMPANY'S DIRECTION AND ITS LACK OF COMMITMENT TO ITS EMPLOYEES.
• THIS HAS LED TO A DECREASE IN PRODUCTIVITY AND A DECREASE IN EMPLOYEE RETENTION.

GOOGLE RESPONSE
TO MASS LAYOFF
•GOOGLE HAS RESPONDED TO THE MASS LAYOFF BY OFFERING SEVERANCE PACKAGES TO THOSE EMPLOYEES WHO HAVE BEEN LAID OFF.
•THE COMPANY HAS ALSO TAKEN STEPS TO ENSURE THAT THOSE EMPLOYEES WHO REMAIN WITH THE COMPANY ARE PROVIDED WITH THE RESOURCES AND SUPPORT THEY NEED TO SUCCEED IN THEIR NEW ROLES .
•THE COMPANY HAS ALSO TAKEN STEPS TO IMPROVE ITS EMPLOYEE RELATIONS, INCLUDING INCREASING TRANSPARENCY ABOUT ITS DECISION-MAKING PROCESS AND PROVIDING MORE OPPORTUNITIES FOR EMPLOYEE FEEDBACK .
• THESE MEASURES ARE INTENDED TO HELP REBUILD TRUST BETWEEN THE COMPANY AND ITS EMPLOYEES, AND TO ENSURE THAT THE COMPANY IS TAKING THE NECESSARY STEPS TO PROTECT ITS EMPLOYEES.

STRATEGIC MOVE
•PROPONENTS OF THE ARGUMENT THAT THE LAYOFF WAS A STRATEGIC MOVE POINT TO THE FACT THAT GOOGLE IS A BUSINESS AND BUSINESSES NEED TO MAKE DECISIONS THAT ARE IN THEIR BEST INTERESTS.
• THE LAYOFFS MAY HAVE BEEN A NECESSARY STEP TO ENSURE THE LONG- TERM VIABILITY OF THE COMPANY .
•IN ADDITION, THE LAYOFFS COULD BE SEEN AS AN EFFORT TO STREAMLINE OPERATIONS AND REDUCE COSTS.
•THIS COULD BE BENEFICIAL IN THE LONG-TERM AS IT COULD LEAD TO A MORE EFFICIENT AND PROFITABLE COMPANY.

FAILURE
•CRITICS OF THE LAYOFF POINT TO THE FACT THAT IT COULD BE SEEN AS A SIGN OF A LACK OF STRATEGIC VISION AND POOR MANAGEMENT.
•THE LAYOFFS COULD BE SEEN AS AN INDICATION THAT THE COMPANY WAS NOT ABLE TO ANTICIPATE THE FUTURE AND MAKE THE NECESSARY CHANGES TO REMAIN COMPETITIVE .
•IN ADDITION, THE LAYOFFS COULD BE SEEN AS A SIGN OF A LACK OF FAITH IN THE COMPANY'S ABILITY TO MANAGE ITS RESOURCES AND PERSONNEL.
• THIS COULD LEAD TO A LACK OF MORALE AMONG THE REMAINING EMPLOYEES, WHICH COULD HAVE A NEGATIVE EFFECT ON THE COMPANY'S PERFORMANCE.

CRITICS OF THE LAYOFF POINT TO THE FACT THAT IT COULD BE SEEN AS A SIGN OF A LACK OF STRATEGIC VISION AND POOR
MANAGEMENT. THE LAYOFFS COULD BE SEEN AS AN INDICATION THAT THE COMPANY WAS NOT ABLE TO ANTICIPATE THE FUTURE AND

IN THE COMPANY'S ABILITY TO MANAGE ITS RESOURCES AND PERSONNEL. THIS COULD LEAD TO A LACK OF MORALE AMONG THE
REMAINING EMPLOYEES, WHICH COULD HAVE A NEGATIVE EFFECT ON THE COMPANY'S PERFORMANCE.

MY PERSPECTIVE
IT IS DIFFICULT TO DEFINITIVELY SAY WHETHER GOOGLE'S MASS LAYOFF WAS A STRATEGIC MOVE OR A FAILURE. THE
MOVE COULD BE SEEN AS EITHER AN ATTEMPT TO STREAMLINE OPERATIONS AND REDUCE COSTS OR AS AN INDICATION OF
A LACK OF STRATEGIC VISION AND POOR MANAGEMENT . ULTIMATELY, IT IS UP TO THE INDIVIDUAL TO DECIDE WHICH
SIDE OF THE ARGUMENT THEY BELIEVE IS MORE CONVINCING.

INTRODUCTION • IN AUGUST 2019, GOOGLE ANNOUNCED A MAJOR RESTRUCTURING OF ITS WORKFORCE, RESULTING IN A MASS LAYOFF OF THOUSANDS OF EMPLOYEES. • THE RESTRUCTURING WAS A RESULT OF A SHIFT IN THE COMPANY'S FOCUS FROM ITS CORE PRODUCTS TO NEW AREAS OF GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT. • THIS RESTRUCTURING HAS HAD A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON THE LIVES OF MANY EMPLOYEES, AND THE COMPANY'S FUTURE DIRECTION . • THIS PRESENTATION WILL PROVIDE AN OVERVIEW OF THE MASS LAYOFF, ITS CAUSES, AND ITS IMPLICATIONS FOR GOOGLE AND ITS EMPLOYEES. • WE WILL ALSO DISCUSS THE COMPANY'S RESPONSE TO THE RESTRUCTURING, AND WHAT IT MEANS FOR THE FUTURE OF THE COMPANY AND ITS EMPLOYEES. 2

REASON FOR LAYOFF • THE MASS LAYOFF BY GOOGLE WAS CAUSED BY A SHIFT IN THE COMPANY'S FOCUS FROM ITS CORE PRODUCTS TO NEW AREAS OF GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT. • THIS SHIFT WAS DRIVEN BY THE NEED TO REMAIN COMPETITIVE IN A RAPIDLY CHANGING TECHNOLOGICAL LANDSCAPE, AND TO MOVE AWAY FROM ITS TRADITIONAL RELIANCE ON ADVERTISING REVENUE . • THE RESTRUCTURING WAS ALSO A RESPONSE TO THE INCREASING PRESSURE FROM THE GOVERNMENT TO BREAK UP THE COMPANY'S MONOPOLY ON CERTAIN MARKETS. • THIS PRESSURE HAS RESULTED IN GOOGLE HAVING TO MAKE CHANGES TO ITS BUSINESS MODEL AND FOCUS ON AREAS OF GROWTH OUTSIDE OF ITS CORE PRODUCTS. 3

THE CAUSE OF MASS LAYOFF •THE MASS LAYOFF BY GOOGLE HAS HAD A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON THE LIVES OF MANY OF ITS EMPLOYEES. • THOUSANDS OF EMPLOYEES HAVE BEEN LAID OFF, AND MANY MORE HAVE HAD THEIR ROLES CHANGED OR THEIR POSITIONS ELIMINATED. THIS HAS RESULTED IN A GREAT DEAL OF UNCERTAINTY FOR MANY EMPLOYEES, AS WELL AS A SENSE OF BETRAYAL BY THE COMPANY . •THE RESTRUCTURING HAS ALSO HAD AN IMPACT ON THE MORALE OF EMPLOYEES, AS MANY HAVE BECOME DISILLUSIONED WITH THE COMPANY'S DIRECTION AND ITS LACK OF COMMITMENT TO ITS EMPLOYEES. • THIS HAS LED TO A DECREASE IN PRODUCTIVITY AND A DECREASE IN EMPLOYEE RETENTION. 4

GOOGLE RESPONSE TO MASS LAYOFF •GOOGLE HAS RESPONDED TO THE MASS LAYOFF BY OFFERING SEVERANCE PACKAGES TO THOSE EMPLOYEES WHO HAVE BEEN LAID OFF. •THE COMPANY HAS ALSO TAKEN STEPS TO ENSURE THAT THOSE EMPLOYEES WHO REMAIN WITH THE COMPANY ARE PROVIDED WITH THE RESOURCES AND SUPPORT THEY NEED TO SUCCEED IN THEIR NEW ROLES . •THE COMPANY HAS ALSO TAKEN STEPS TO IMPROVE ITS EMPLOYEE RELATIONS, INCLUDING INCREASING TRANSPARENCY ABOUT ITS DECISION-MAKING PROCESS AND PROVIDING MORE OPPORTUNITIES FOR EMPLOYEE FEEDBACK . • THESE MEASURES ARE INTENDED TO HELP REBUILD TRUST BETWEEN THE COMPANY AND ITS EMPLOYEES, AND TO ENSURE THAT THE COMPANY IS TAKING THE NECESSARY STEPS TO PROTECT ITS EMPLOYEES. 5

STRATEGIC MOVE •PROPONENTS OF THE ARGUMENT THAT THE LAYOFF WAS A STRATEGIC MOVE POINT TO THE FACT THAT GOOGLE IS A BUSINESS AND BUSINESSES NEED TO MAKE DECISIONS THAT ARE IN THEIR BEST INTERESTS. • THE LAYOFFS MAY HAVE BEEN A NECESSARY STEP TO ENSURE THE LONG- TERM VIABILITY OF THE COMPANY . •IN ADDITION, THE LAYOFFS COULD BE SEEN AS AN EFFORT TO STREAMLINE OPERATIONS AND REDUCE COSTS. •THIS COULD BE BENEFICIAL IN THE LONG-TERM AS IT COULD LEAD TO A MORE EFFICIENT AND PROFITABLE COMPANY. 6

FAILURE •CRITICS OF THE LAYOFF POINT TO THE FACT THAT IT COULD BE SEEN AS A SIGN OF A LACK OF STRATEGIC VISION AND POOR MANAGEMENT. •THE LAYOFFS COULD BE SEEN AS AN INDICATION THAT THE COMPANY WAS NOT ABLE TO ANTICIPATE THE FUTURE AND MAKE THE NECESSARY CHANGES TO REMAIN COMPETITIVE . •IN ADDITION, THE LAYOFFS COULD BE SEEN AS A SIGN OF A LACK OF FAITH IN THE COMPANY'S ABILITY TO MANAGE ITS RESOURCES AND PERSONNEL. • THIS COULD LEAD TO A LACK OF MORALE AMONG THE REMAINING EMPLOYEES, WHICH COULD HAVE A NEGATIVE EFFECT ON THE COMPANY'S PERFORMANCE. 7
  • 8. CONCLUSION CRITICS OF THE LAYOFF POINT TO THE FACT THAT IT COULD BE SEEN AS A SIGN OF A LACK OF STRATEGIC VISION AND POOR MANAGEMENT. THE LAYOFFS COULD BE SEEN AS AN INDICATION THAT THE COMPANY WAS NOT ABLE TO ANTICIPATE THE FUTURE AND MAKE THE NECESSARY CHANGES TO REMAIN COMPETITIVE . IN ADDITION, THE LAYOFFS COULD BE SEEN AS A SIGN OF A LACK OF FAITH IN THE COMPANY'S ABILITY TO MANAGE ITS RESOURCES AND PERSONNEL. THIS COULD LEAD TO A LACK OF MORALE AMONG THE REMAINING EMPLOYEES, WHICH COULD HAVE A NEGATIVE EFFECT ON THE COMPANY'S PERFORMANCE. 8
  • 9. MY PERSPECTIVE IT IS DIFFICULT TO DEFINITIVELY SAY WHETHER GOOGLE'S MASS LAYOFF WAS A STRATEGIC MOVE OR A FAILURE. THE MOVE COULD BE SEEN AS EITHER AN ATTEMPT TO STREAMLINE OPERATIONS AND REDUCE COSTS OR AS AN INDICATION OF A LACK OF STRATEGIC VISION AND POOR MANAGEMENT . ULTIMATELY, IT IS UP TO THE INDIVIDUAL TO DECIDE WHICH SIDE OF THE ARGUMENT THEY BELIEVE IS MORE CONVINCING. 9
