Watch Dog Dads - School Presentation
1. Watch D.O.G.S.
A Program I Believe in!
One that will raise the banner of
fathering in our home and our school!
2. What is “ Watch D.O.G.S.” ??
• A father involvement program of the National
center for fathering ( www.fathers.com)
• 501c3 not for profit organization
3. “ As we work to drive down drop out
rates and increase graduation and college
completion rates, fathers have an
important role to play… children are
always watching. Engaged fathers
can strengthen our schools, mentor, and
tutor students and demonstrate through
their actions how much they value their
children’s education.”
Anne Duncan U.S Dept. of Education Secretary 2009
4. Kids develop more fully socially, physically,
academically, emotionally, spiritually…
when they have a positive male role
model actively engaged in their lives
6. Did you know…
In the US alone there are 25 million kids without a dad
9. Poor
5x more likely to live below the poverty line
when a father is absent from the home
14. Father-Absent = 2x more likely to repeat a grade
Father INVOLVEMENT is associated with the
likelihood of a student getting mostly A’s
Need more reasons to care?
16. Why does Watch D.O.G.S Exist?
Awaken fathers to the
values and benefits of
committed fathering.
17. Why does Watch D.O.G.S Exist?

Dad’s of Great Students
Endorsed by the President’s Advisory Council..
In 2010, was one of their recommendations for advancing fatherhood in America
The program has been recognized by on the floor of Congress as a program that “can be a great tool in our efforts to prevent school violence and the improve student performance because it can increase parental initiative and involvement in their children’s education.” (Congressional Record, February 7, 2000 page S392).
Why should we promote father involvement in education?
Anne Duncan U.S Dept. of Education Secretary 2009 has this quote
Almost creepy how closely they watch us and try to emulate our behavior
… good or bad behaviors
Boys and girls..
Male role model.. Can be a father, step father, grandpa, uncle, coach…
… some adult male to be a strong role model and example
Can be more than one, but sometimes 1 is hard to come by
Especially considering the role model needs to be actively engaged
Some families don’t have this opportunity
Physical fatherlessness: The guy simply isn’t there
Dead, left, unknown…
There’s at least one of these kids in our school… who’s lives you can make an impact
Emotional fatherlessness: The father is in the home but not emotionally engaged in the child’s life.
Emotional fatherlessness is harder to track
may actually be more damaging to the child than total absence of the father
… I’m guilty of this sometimes.. Busy, he just wants my attention…
Scary because of the proven effects this can have on children
US Census Bureau said 5x more likely to be at or below poverty line
Study published by the Journal of Criminal Justice
Adolescents, particularly males
Research in child development has shown conclusively that teens without
INVOLVED fathers.. (not no fathers).. Involved fathers!
It gets worse..
US Dept of Health and Human Services…
US Dept of Health and Human Services…
National Longitudinal Survey of Youth .. Obese children more likely..
… I’m sure there are more stats, but you get the point
All of you are taking a step to be involved just by being here tonight
Go ahead, pat yourself on the back
Shake your neighbors hand and congratulate them
They care, and because they do… it will help your child and everyone else
Program to help you understand why it is so important to be an involved father
Help you discover some of the benefits of being involved
Better relationship with your child
Not all kids have the male role model at home…
Every child in the school gets to have some exposure to a male role model
Help make a difference in your community
Have an impact on your child’s influences
Anyone (male) who wants to volunteer their time to help..
Hangs out in the hallways between classes…
Gives out high-fives
Hangs out in the library or classroom
Reads books, works on flash cards
Hangs out at lunch
Helps keep the peace!
Hangs out at recess
… helps keep the peace
Reduces bullying
Listens and provides advice
… coach and mentor
Watches the school entrances
Help with carpool
other activities where you actively engage with not just your children
but other students as well.
Just being their offers additional security at the school during the day!
Winners are students, schools, and dads
Children gain a positive male role model.
Schools are safer, get help they need with additional oversight
Fathers get a glimpse of their child’s everyday world and can relate and connect better.
-- can joke together about the broken water fountain that squirts you in the face
More importantly… Fathers gain a greater awareness of the positive impact they can have on their child’s life..
You get to be a HERO..
Smartest guy in the room, best basketball player, fastest runner
You are the dad the kids talk about that day…
Your child gets to be proud, helps their self esteem
Even more awesome than you being here..

There are over 150 of you here.. Which almost doubles the average if you sign-up
Shows how much you all care about your children and your community
Who loves your child?
Who wants to be where our kids need us?
Who wants to make a difference in the community?
Who wants to know what this costs?
Donate 1 full school day to participate at the school….. That’s it!
You might need to buy a t-shirt…
Would love to have you donate more time, but we just ask for each of you to do at least one day
Pick a day and sign up!
