  2. 2. What does it mean to monitor? <ul><li>Monitoring is when you stop to make sure you understand what you are reading. </li></ul><ul><li>Monitoring focuses on making sure you understand by asking yourself, “What did I just read?” </li></ul>
  3. 3. What does it mean to clarify? <ul><li>Clarifying is when you make the meaning of the text clear. </li></ul><ul><li>Clarifying is when you use specific strategies to figure out the meaning of what you’re reading. </li></ul>
  4. 4. When do you monitor and clarify? <ul><li>You can monitor and clarify during reading. </li></ul><ul><li>You can monitor and clarify after reading. </li></ul><ul><li>In other words, monitor and clarify during and after reading! </li></ul>
  5. 5. How do you monitor and clarify? <ul><li>Ask yourself if what you are reading makes sense. </li></ul><ul><li>Could you explain it to someone else? </li></ul><ul><li>If not, skim or read it again! </li></ul><ul><li>Look at any pictures or diagrams for clues. </li></ul><ul><li>Try explaining it to yourself or someone else. </li></ul>
  6. 6. Questions to help you monitor and clarify! <ul><li>What is the main idea? </li></ul><ul><li>What clues and details make you think so? </li></ul><ul><li>Does that make sense? </li></ul><ul><li>Does this text remind you of anything you already know? </li></ul>

  8. 8. Now it’s your turn to monitor and clarify! <ul><li>Turn to a partner and discuss the poem. </li></ul><ul><li>Be sure to monitor and clarify your understanding of the poem. </li></ul><ul><li>Remember, monitor/clarify is a way of making sure you understand what you read. </li></ul>
