  • The rising India is “incidental” and superficial. The destitute India is structural and deep What do I mean by structural? *** Chandrayaan Image: http://www.isro.org/Chandrayaan/htmls/resources_image.htm Dhanush image: http://beta.thehindu.com/multimedia/dynamic/00017/dhanush_17394f.jpg Infosys Image: http://www.infosys.com/newsroom/journalist-resources/Pages/infosyslogo.aspx Tata Nano: http://tatanano.inservices.tatamotors.com/tatamotors/index.php?option=com_content&task=gallery&id=17 Iflex image: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Iflex51.JPG Middle class image: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Greatindiaplace.jpg
  • Let us look at some of the challenges we face as a society// SO: As you begin to think of these challenges, ponder on the root causes…unless you attack the core nothing much will improve; Beggar Alsm pitcure: K L Kamat/ Kamat.com// Bent Beggar picture source: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/11/05/weekinreview/05india.html?n=Top/Reference/Times%20Topics/People/G/Gandhi,%20Indira
  • The challenges we face as a country
  • Violence/ unsafe
  • Ad-hoc and populist policies RATHER than structural reforms not serving national interest Socialist vs Free Market NREGA
  • It is not an answer because it does not attack the root cause…and because of that, charity can never fix India
  • I’ll try and avoid the “P-word” during the next one and half hours
  • I’ll try and avoid the “P-word” during the next one and half hours
  • The reason for terrorist attacks and lack of any sense is ineffective leadership// strategic failure to recognise existential threats such as that of massive illegal infiltration and of increasing sway of armed militias- Naxals across large parts of India// and the reason behind poverty/deprivation and so on is e poor choices that we made in terms of defining ideology of our newly born country in 1947
  • That blithely ignores the misery and the deprivation of the masses
  • HOW EMBARASSING? This slide needs no comment … To end on a positive note, it might be worthwhile to appreciate how some criminal turned politicians and their kin have lost the plot. RJD MP Mohammad Shahabuddin’s wife Heena Sahab lost in Siwan; Ranjeeta Ranjan, the wife of Pappu Yadav lost in Supaul; Congress candidate Lovely Anand, wife of former JD-U MP Anand Mohan, was defeated in the Sheohar constituency. *** BUT Several heavy weight candidates with criminal background have been rejected by voters. In fact top 5 MPs with criminal cases from 2004 Lok Sabha have been rejected by voters. Others who have been rejected are Atiq Ahmad, Mitrasen Yadav, Mukhtar Ansari, Taslimuddin, Abu Azmi and Mohd Tahir. …
  • Unwillingness to recognise and confront existential threats to territorial integrity, sovereignty and identity // I speak from personal experience that Inability to take hard decisions; IMDT – Assam (regularisation of illegal immigrants)
  • THIS is what strategic failure looks like/ This IS strategic failure.. • BUT there is one more cause which is not on this slide – Apathy// Our Apathy – yours and mine – PROBLEM IS US – who are not bothered about corruption/ the lot/ the collapsing infrastructure/ the threat to our security and lives and our embarrassing political leadership Source: http://kanchangupta.blogspot.com/2009/05/three-myths-and-election.html

  • And the response I get when I say these things – the responses I get – follow a pattern
  • 3 steps to change: Agree that things need to change// Agree on change to what// Then mobilise to bring about change
