One building by an architects
The competition
 A competition was held for the new Campus of the Vienna
University of Economics and Business.
 The Jury decided upon the selection of the following projects:
i. Zaha Hadid Architects – Zaha Hadid, Germany Library & Learning
Center (LLC)
ii. Hitoshi Abe Studio – Hitoshi Abe; Japan Department Building (O2)
iii. Estudio Carme Pinos – Carme Pinos, Spain Department Building
(W1)
iv. NO.MAD Arquitectos – Eduardo Arroyo, Spain Executive Academy
(W1-EA)
v. CRABstudio Architects – Peter Cook, England Department Building
(W2)
Site plan
• BUSarchitektur designed the master plan together
with the Lecture Room Center and Department
Building.
• They allocated plots on the campus to different
architects and only defined the entry/exit points giving
the individual architects freedom of designing.

• The entire campus is bordered by trees and
shrubs, that is, a natural green boundary. This is
the filter to the city and to immediate vehicular
traffic.
• Messe wien is located on northern side and Prater
Park on southern side of the campus.

• The campus is designed as a "walk along the park“
• Not only the buildings themselves, but also the surrounding grounds offer
plenty of opportunities for communication and meeting people.
• Along the main path, at intervals, spaces are provided which allow people
to gather and interact .
• Also these nodes acts as the connection between the building and outside
.
• The campus is welcome to all user groups providing flexible spaces to work
/interact/play/relax at any time. Visitors and area residents are more than
welcome at Campus WU.
• There are no fences around the campus.
 It is universally designed. All
auditoriums are specially
equipped for people with
disabilities, all areas are
designed to be wheelchair
accessible, and the campus
also features a tactile
guidance system for the
visually impaired.
• Between the paved area
and buildings, edges
were created using
gravel or bushes.
• The imposing Library and Learning Center (LC), designed by the Iraqi-
British architect Zaha Hadid, is a testament to the central importance of
research and teaching at WU.
• The Library & Learning Center is surrounded by five building complexes,
including the Teaching center, which houses most of WU’s auditoriums.
• The Teaching Center is intended mainly for bachelor degree students,
while the master degree programs are taught primarily in the individual
Department buildings.
• The Executive Academy building is the home of continuing education
and life-long learning programs.
• In this way, the various buildings and their functions reflect the three tiers
of teaching and learning.
The
Buildings
EXECUTIVE ACADEMY
 The building was designed by Spanish
Architects NO.MAD Arquitectos, Madrid.
 The EA building is a seven storey tower.
 The outer façade is made of glass and aluminum.
.
 The pattern of the windows appears random, but
actually follows a specific algorithm.
 The EA building also features a café with spacious
outdoor seating on the ground floor and a
restaurant and bar on the roof level.
DEPARTMENTS AND
ADMINISTRATION The building was designed by Sir
Peter Cook and CRABstudio,
London.
 The building includes numerous
passages, niches, terraces, atriums,
and open spaces with benches that
offer attractive views of the Prater
Park.
 The upper levels are characterized by
the colored bands of the striped
façade, ranging from dark orange to
light beige, separated by windows.
 Untreated silver fir planks are
mounted horizontally and vertically on
the façades of both buildings,
providing sun protection.

 The Department building was
designed by Barcelona's Estudio
Carme Pinós S. L.
 The geometric façade features a playful
arrangement of parallelograms with
dynamically placed windows, also based
on a pattern of intersecting
parallelograms.
 Folding aluminium shutters provide
protection from direct sun and give the
façade an ever-changing appearance
LIBRARY & LEARNING
CENTER
 The heart of the new university campus is
the centrally located Library & Learning
Centre, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects,
Hamburg.
 The building's asymmetrical, cantilevered roof is
visible from afar, and the prominent glassfronted
monitor, characteristic of Zaha Hadid's designs,
faces Prater Park.
 The external appearance of the building is
characterized by contrasting sections of light
and dark.
 The cantilevered roof extending towards the
square makes the entrance instantly
recognizable.
TEACHING CENTER
TEACHING CENTER
 It was designed by Vienna-based architects
BUSarchitektur ZT GmbH.
 The façade of the Teaching Centre is made of Corten
weathering steel, which with time will form a protective,
colored patina.
 Through the atrium, students can access a cafe and the
self-study areas for quiet work, arranged in a spiral
pattern around the atrium.
 Project rooms encourage communication and group
work, and a mix of quiet areas and open spaces
connected by ramps and staircases provide a dynamic
atmosphere.

•Generally ,auditorium are symmetrical
but this was asymmetrical.

•According to Architect, the angle
with screen must be 30 degree for
good visibility.
•For an auditorium, acoustics must
be taken care of.

  • 4. The competition  A competition was held for the new Campus of the Vienna University of Economics and Business.  The Jury decided upon the selection of the following projects: i. Zaha Hadid Architects – Zaha Hadid, Germany Library & Learning Center (LLC) ii. Hitoshi Abe Studio – Hitoshi Abe; Japan Department Building (O2) iii. Estudio Carme Pinos – Carme Pinos, Spain Department Building (W1) iv. NO.MAD Arquitectos – Eduardo Arroyo, Spain Executive Academy (W1-EA) v. CRABstudio Architects – Peter Cook, England Department Building (W2)
  • 5. Site plan • BUSarchitektur designed the master plan together with the Lecture Room Center and Department Building. • They allocated plots on the campus to different architects and only defined the entry/exit points giving the individual architects freedom of designing.
  • 6. Master plan Concourses Conclaves Tree boundary • The entire campus is bordered by trees and shrubs, that is, a natural green boundary. This is the filter to the city and to immediate vehicular traffic. • Messe wien is located on northern side and Prater Park on southern side of the campus.

  • 9. • The campus is designed as a "walk along the park“ • Not only the buildings themselves, but also the surrounding grounds offer plenty of opportunities for communication and meeting people. • Along the main path, at intervals, spaces are provided which allow people to gather and interact . • Also these nodes acts as the connection between the building and outside .
  • 10. • The campus is welcome to all user groups providing flexible spaces to work /interact/play/relax at any time. Visitors and area residents are more than welcome at Campus WU. • There are no fences around the campus.
  • 11.  It is universally designed. All auditoriums are specially equipped for people with disabilities, all areas are designed to be wheelchair accessible, and the campus also features a tactile guidance system for the visually impaired. • Between the paved area and buildings, edges were created using gravel or bushes.
  • 12. • The imposing Library and Learning Center (LC), designed by the Iraqi- British architect Zaha Hadid, is a testament to the central importance of research and teaching at WU. • The Library & Learning Center is surrounded by five building complexes, including the Teaching center, which houses most of WU’s auditoriums. • The Teaching Center is intended mainly for bachelor degree students, while the master degree programs are taught primarily in the individual Department buildings. • The Executive Academy building is the home of continuing education and life-long learning programs. • In this way, the various buildings and their functions reflect the three tiers of teaching and learning. EXECUTIVE ACADEMY  The building was designed by Spanish Architects NO.MAD Arquitectos, Madrid.  The EA building is a seven storey tower.  The outer façade is made of glass and aluminum. .  The pattern of the windows appears random, but actually follows a specific algorithm.  The EA building also features a café with spacious outdoor seating on the ground floor and a restaurant and bar on the roof level.

DEPARTMENTS AND ADMINISTRATION The building was designed by Sir Peter Cook and CRABstudio, London.  The building includes numerous passages, niches, terraces, atriums, and open spaces with benches that offer attractive views of the Prater Park.  The upper levels are characterized by the colored bands of the striped façade, ranging from dark orange to light beige, separated by windows.  Untreated silver fir planks are mounted horizontally and vertically on the façades of both buildings, providing sun protection.
  • 16. DEPARTMENTS  The Department building was designed by Barcelona's Estudio Carme Pinós S. L.  The geometric façade features a playful arrangement of parallelograms with dynamically placed windows, also based on a pattern of intersecting parallelograms.  Folding aluminium shutters provide protection from direct sun and give the façade an ever-changing appearance
  • 18.  The heart of the new university campus is the centrally located Library & Learning Centre, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, Hamburg.  The building's asymmetrical, cantilevered roof is visible from afar, and the prominent glassfronted monitor, characteristic of Zaha Hadid's designs, faces Prater Park.  The external appearance of the building is characterized by contrasting sections of light and dark.  The cantilevered roof extending towards the square makes the entrance instantly recognizable.

TEACHING CENTER  It was designed by Vienna-based architects BUSarchitektur ZT GmbH.  The façade of the Teaching Centre is made of Corten weathering steel, which with time will form a protective, colored patina.  Through the atrium, students can access a cafe and the self-study areas for quiet work, arranged in a spiral pattern around the atrium.  Project rooms encourage communication and group work, and a mix of quiet areas and open spaces connected by ramps and staircases provide a dynamic atmosphere.

  • 26. •According to Architect, the angle with screen must be 30 degree for good visibility. •For an auditorium, acoustics must be taken care of.
