2. Introduction
I have met a lot of aspiring artists who dream of owning a
design business.
Some talk the talk but very few can walk the walk. Listed
below are the typical designer archetypes when it comes to
starting a business.
Which one are you?
3. The Waiter
These are the artists who wait for the sun, moon, planets, and
galaxies to align to start their business. In other words, they
are waiting for the “right conditions”.
5. The Idealist
Philosophically driven, the idealist does not care who likes or
dislikes their art. They have a select few who subscribe to
their services.
However those few customers are paying big sums of cash.
6. The Entrepreneur
Willing to forego financial hardship, the entrepreneur sees
opportunity and takes action to get business. These artists are
rare; combining both business and art skills for the purpose of
solving problems for money.
They don’t have all the business knowledge, tools, skills, or
experience required to “typically” start, but they can sell
their services to make money.
Each sale contributes to building their business, brick by
brick.
7. The Explorer
These artists don’t know whether or not business is the right
direction for them.
Rather than failing to try, they make an effort to get started.
They don’t want to live a life of regret so trying is the only
way to finding out.
8. The “Transitioner”
These designers have been working as an employee and want
to transition to running their own business.
Most are a combination of the Explorer and the Entrepreneur.
Although some become the Waiter or the Procrastinator.
