2. One of the magazine adverts I have chose to study is from the magazine ‘Q’, its
Ellie Goulding advertising her new album ‘lights’, I used lacey's repertoire of
elements to do so.
The reason I chose to analyse this advert due to the engaging features, The gold
lights against the black background is very eye catching and fits with the album
name. Ellie Goulding’s name is in gold which contrasts against the black
background and stands out, similar to another advertisement I have studied of
Jessie J.
The target audience for this magazine advert is most probably teenagers of
mainly girls. The traditional use of colours shows that it is not particularly
targeted towards any particular
gender however the subtle lights
and the way in which the text is
thin and curvy suggests it is more
Female orientated
3. Costume and makeup
Ellie Goulding’s costume isn’t shown, however it looks like a dark top. Her
makeup is very subtle and natural, her makeup suggests innocence as the does
not in the slightest look fierce nor like she has an attitude, her eye makeup is
also very subtle and flattering.
Lighting
Although her outfit seems to be dark, it contrasts with the use of gold within her hair and
the lights which are shining. The lighting within the photo is very high key at the top of the
page and fades into low key at the bottom.
Ellie Goulding doesn’t look focused in the image, she looks like she’s distracted by
something, her eyes are looking away from the camera and her arm is placed on her
head.
4. Colour scheme
There are only 2 main colours within the magazine article, black and gold, however
the writing at the bottom of the page is white. The main colour in the article is gold
as Ellie Goulding’s hair, lights and name are each the main focus of the advert and
are each gold. The writing underneath her name, is white, which I think was done in
order for it to stand out against the colour black
in which the text is displayed on.
Ellie Goulding is the only person shown on the magazine advert, this is
because she is a solo artist. Her makeup and pose suggests Innocence. She is
known for her messy, blonde hair style, in this image, her blonde hair has shimmers
of gold lights in it which is extremely eye-catching. Her stance and pose shows her
to be slightly upset, she looks like she is thinking about something.
5. The purpose and narrative events within the magazine advert is that she is
trying to gain more listeners for her music, The way in which she is posing
suggests she is in love, this could reflect on her album songs and to my own
knowledge, I am aware she already has some love songs and has done
covers of love songs too.
The iconic feature within this advert is Ellie Goulding’s hair, she’s known for
the way it always looks messy and un brushed. The lights however are iconic
of stars, and she is a pop star. They also resemble the lights when an artist is
onstage.
6. The advert is laid out with a large image of Ellie Goulding which takes up the
majority of the advert making her the centre of attention, it has no props
however the article does include lights in order to match the album name
displayed underneath the image. Her name and the album name are
positioned within the middle of the advert similar to most layouts of music
album adverts. The fact they are in the middle enables the advert to catch the
viewers’ attention so that that are immediately drawn towards it. The text is
also printed over the top of the image, similar to Jessie J’s advert for her
album, ‘who you are’. The name is striking and intriguing as it is in the colour
gold which is emphasised by the lights shining through her hair from the
background. The colour gold indicates superiority and wealth.
7. There is not much text other than some slight bits of information
therefor the viewer will not get bored and see paragraphs of writing
and ignore the advert, they will naturally see the gold writing and
Ellie Goulding’s image and want to know when it comes out.
The white writing at the bottom will also intrigue fans as it says that
two of her very popular hits will be on the CD, again done to catch
the viewers’ attention.
