Did you know that puppies cannot see or hear for the first two weeks of life? In fact, they can detect sounds that are four times further away than human are able to hear.
  10. 10. Baby rabbits are called kits. Arabbit‟s long ears can turn inany direction to help it eventhe faintest sound. Rabbit willthump their hind legs to letother rabbits know when theysense danger.Rabbits usually live ingroups in undergroundburrows. They eat grass,bark, leaves, and berries.
  11. 11. Chimpanzees show theirfeelings very much the wayhumans do. Theyhug, kiss, smile, and evenhold on to each otherwhen sad or scared. Theyhave very long arms, whichthey use to swing. Unlike most animals, chimpanzees are able to make and use tools. They use rocks to crack open nuts, and use sticks to smash fruit and dig for ants. Chimpanzees teach their young how to use tools for gathering food.
  12. 12. Kangaroos are marsupials,which are mammals thatcarry their babies inpouches outside theirstomachs. Baby kangarooare called joeys. Joeys willgrow in its mother‟s pouchfor almost a year.
  13. 13. Giraffes are the tallestanimals in the world. Theyuse their long necks toreach leaves in the highestbranches of trees. Whenbaby giraffes are born,they are already taller thanmany grown-up human!Since it‟s very hard forthem to bend over and laydown on the ground,giraffes can sleep standingup. A giraffe lays down tosleep for less than twohours a day.
  14. 14. Owls are birds that sleep duringthe day and hunt for food atnight. Their very large eyesallow them to take in more lightand see better in the dark. Owlscan see up to 100 times betterthan people.Baby owls are called owlets.Owls have excellent hearing.The owls ears are hiddenunder its feathers. If they heara noise coming from behindthem, owls can turn theirheads almost all the wayaround and even upside downto look back.

Although itcannot fly, the ostrich can runabout forty miles per hoursand it is faster than other bird!One ostrich egg is about thesize of twenty-four chickeneggs! Ostrich chicks are alreadytwelve inches tall when theyare born.If the ostrich feels threatened,it kicks. Ostriches use theirstrong and powerful kick toprotect themselves againstanimals like lions.
  16. 16. Lions are members of thecat family. They live on thesavanna together in groupsof fifteen to forty lions.These group are calledprides. Female lions calledlionesses.A lion‟s roar can be heardup to five miles away! Mostlions don‟t start roaringuntil they are about twoyears old.
  17. 17. Alligators are reptiles that livein swamps, marshes, riversand lakes. Alligators havebumpy, scaly skin, fourwebbed feet, and long tails.When searching for food, thealligator swims with just itseyes and nostrils above thewater.Although they have abouteighty teeth, alligators do notchew their food. Once theycapture prey in their powerfulsnouts, alligators swallow itwhole. Alligators lay forty tofifty eggs at a time in nestmade of mud, leaves, andplants.
  18. 18. The cobra is a snake that cangrow to be between three andfive feet long. Cobra have ashy and gentle nature.Cobra are very good athunting for food on thedarkest nights.
  19. 19. The tortoise is one of the longest-living animals on earth. Many ofthem live for more than 150-200years.If a tortoise sense danger, it will hideits head, neck, and legs inside itshard shell.
  20. 20. The frog is an amphibian. They capture spiders, ants, and termites with theirlong, sticky tongue.
  21. 21. Although they are small, antsare incredibly strong insects.Some ants can carry objectsthat are twenty times theirsize! Ants live in undergroundnests in big groups calledcolonies. Their nests have longtunnels and several „rooms‟.Ants use their antennae orfeelers, to communicate witheach other. When two antstouch feelers, they are usuallytelling each other where tofind food.
  22. 22. A caterpillar has a mouthand strong jaws that helpit eat leaves. It eats andgrows until it becomepupa. Then it staysinside the pupa as itgrows into butterfly.A caterpillar is a babybutterfly or moth. Mostcaterpillars have sixteenlegs and spend most ofits time eating leaves andflowers. As it eats,caterpillar gets biggerand bigger.

Instead, they drinkflower nectar through atube called proboscis,which looks like a longand black tongue.Butterflies smell withtheir antennae andbreathe through tinyholes along the sides oftheir bodies. They alsouse their feet to tastefood. Butterflies havespecial sensors on theirfeet that let them “taste”the flower or fruit theyare standing on!
