Virtualization• Virtualization means to create a virtual version of a device or resource, such as a server, storage device or network where the framework divides the resource into one or more execution environments• Pros: server consolidation, resource flexibility, portability & disaster recovery• Cons: unpredictable performance, risky to put multiple systems on one host

Green Benefits of Virtualization• Green Benefits – Cut power demand (electricity for powering and cooling) through consolidation – Get more out of existing resources and reduce costs by shrinking number of servers• Examples: – VMware Server Virtualization: Partitions a physical server into multiple virtual machines – Microsoft Virtual PC: Run multiple operating systems on a single physical computer

Green Servers and Benefits• Solution to the data center energy crisis• Higher performance servers that require less energy consumption• Some contain internal cooling technology or smart sensors that monitor heat created by the server and adjust fans• Unified server cabinet for clustering apps• Modular tower can add processing power and memory capacity as needed
