What is it? <ul><li>A reading programme to encourage reading for pleasure and raise literacy </li></ul><ul><li>Recommends books that are at the right level for reading capability </li></ul><ul><li>Rewards reading for all pupils, regardless of ability </li></ul><ul><li>Pupils take quizzes which measure their comprehension </li></ul>

How does it work for the pupils? <ul><li>Pupils take a Star Reader test to assess their reading level </li></ul><ul><li>They choose and read a book appropriate to their level </li></ul><ul><li>They take a quiz about the book </li></ul><ul><li>They get rewarded for their reading achievements </li></ul><ul><li>They are encouraged and enthused to read more, and so their literacy improves </li></ul>

Star Reader Test <ul><li>Pupils take a Star Reader test which assesses their vocabulary </li></ul><ul><li>From this test we are given a reading age, National Curriculum level and ZPD (what the hell is this?) </li></ul><ul><li>From this, we can also assess their development over the year </li></ul>
  5. 5. Choosing books <ul><li>Books in the Library that have AR quizzes are labelled/colour-coded on the spine </li></ul><ul><li>Pupils use their ZPD (level range) to choose a book </li></ul><ul><li>This book should be appropriate for their reading capabilities </li></ul>
  6. 6. Take a Quiz <ul><li>Once a pupil has read a book, they should take a quiz </li></ul><ul><li>You can check to see if a book has a quiz online ( ) </li></ul><ul><li>Quizzes have 10 or 20 questions, depending on length/level of book </li></ul><ul><li>Demo… </li></ul>
  7. 7. Rewards <ul><li>Two merits for 70%+ and three merits for 100% </li></ul><ul><li>100% Club – prize draw at end of term along with prize for achievement </li></ul>
  8. 8. What can we do as teachers? <ul><li>Promote reading and AR </li></ul><ul><li>Recommend they read books at their level </li></ul><ul><li>Encourage them to read and take quizzes </li></ul><ul><li>Check their progress </li></ul>
  9. 9. How can you check pupils’ progress? <ul><li>Run reports from AR website, link on desktops ( </li></ul><ul><li>Each person has an individual username and password: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>xxxxxxxxxx </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>xxxxxxxxxxx </li></ul></ul>

Star Reading Reports <ul><li>Useful data on the overall reading levels and achievement of pupils </li></ul><ul><li>The Star Reading “Growth” report will show all Star test data over a period </li></ul><ul><li>The Star Reading “Diagnostic” report will give detailed analysis on individual pupils </li></ul>
  11. 11. Accelerated Reader Reports <ul><li>Class Record books will list pupils’ quiz results on-screen </li></ul><ul><li>The “Pupil Record” report will detail quiz results for each pupil </li></ul>
  12. 12. Home Connect <ul><li>Parents can log-in and see what pupils have been reading </li></ul><ul><li>Encourage parent involvement </li></ul>

Current use <ul><li>Year 7/8 – bi-/weekly library lesson for private reading time, borrow/return books and take AR quizzes </li></ul><ul><li>Many pupils not engaging – why? </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Not readers generally? </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Lack of opportunity/encouragement? </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Lack of incentive? </li></ul></ul>
