outcomes & timeframes
1. Project name: Western Indian Ocean GEF-Marine
Highway and Coastal Contamination Prevention
Project
2. Objective: To assist the Participating States to increase
the safety and efficiency of navigation in the Western
Indian Ocean
3. Countries involved: Comoros, Kenya, Madagascar,
Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles ,South Africa &
Tanzania. [France ( La Reunion)]
4. Timeframe: September 2007 until June 2011, extended
until December 2012
3. Key results/innovations in the areas of process, stress
reduction & environmental status.
1. Survey of the route – Mozambique channel (850’ x 30’)
2. Port safety of navigation requirements
3. Preparation of oil spill & HNS spill plans
4. Training of spill responders, level 1 to level 3. Train the trainers
course
5. Sensitivity atlas completed . Oil spill equipment provided.
6. Regional agreement for oil spill monitoring & setting up of a RCC
7. Training of Port State Control Officers ,Aids to navigation & intro. to
hydrography & cartography
8. Installation of AIS
9. Hydrographic surveys for Maputo & Zanzibar
10. Support to search & rescue activities
