Hoisting And Luffing Winches
1. Hoisting and Luffing Winches
In 2003 a drydock company in the Middle East started works
for a new floating sheerleg with a 2000 ton hoisting capacity.
As there was no local experience with the design such
equipment Western European contactors were hired to
assist in the process. Our challenge was to design the luffing
and hoisting winches in such a way that they could be
fabricated locally.
Maximum line pull 85 metric ton at 5th layer (luffing)
60 metric ton at 7th layer (hoisting)
Wire speed 0-20 m/min nominal line pull
20-40 m/min reduced line pull
Spooling capacity 1636 m
Drums construction High Strength steel with Lebus shells
Deck mounting Deck eyes, 4off
Power Electrical master/slave system
Transmission Planetary gearbox with external pinion
The winches, pontoon and crane structure were designed in
the Netherlands under supervision of DNV. Key components
were selected and ordered in Western Europe while
fabrication of the steel structure and commissioning was done
on site in the Middle East.
