  2. 2. I am going to introduce you to some of the lawsof Mesopotamia. Back then, punishment was extremelysevere, they wouldn’t just put people in jail, peoplemight lose a limb.
  3. 3. In 1750 BC, the Babylonian king Hammurabi, created themajor set of laws in Mesopotamian time, The Code ofHammurabi. The Code of Hammurabi consisted of 282laws. They had the bad deed and how the wrong doerwould be punished for all 3 types ofpeople, nobles, commoners and slaves. The saying was“An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.” The Code ofHammurabi was carved on a 2.2 meter high piece of blackdiorite, with 16 columns on the front and 28 on the back.The carving on the front shows Hammurabi receiving thelaws from the sun god, Shamash. The laws influenced theMesopotamians to accept the authority of the king. TheCode of Hammurabi is now on exhibit in The LouvreMuseum in Paris, France.
