    16. 16. <ul><li>We Wear The Mask </li></ul><ul><li>We wear the mask that grins and lies, </li></ul><ul><li>It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes,- </li></ul><ul><li>This debt we pay to human guile; </li></ul><ul><li>With torn and bleeding hearts we smile, </li></ul><ul><li>And mouth with myriad subtleties. </li></ul><ul><li>Why should the world be over-wise, </li></ul><ul><li>In counting all our tears and sighs? </li></ul><ul><li>Nay, let them only see us, while </li></ul><ul><li>We wear the mask. </li></ul><ul><li>We smile, but, O great Christ, our cries </li></ul><ul><li>To thee from tortured souls arise. </li></ul><ul><li>We sing, but oh the clay is vile </li></ul><ul><li>Beneath our feet, and long the mile; </li></ul><ul><li>But let the world think other-wise, </li></ul><ul><li>We wear the mask! </li></ul><ul><li>Explication:     &quot;We Wear the Mask&quot; is probably Dunbar's most famous piece of poetry.  The author is writing about the &quot;mask&quot; that human beings wear in front of other human beings to disguise any pain, sadness, or turmoil that they may be going through at the time.  Dunbar is saying that humans often are not honest with those around them about their feelings because it is easier to make them believe everything is okay, and how true he is!  He is also stating in the third stanza that we call on God when no one else is looking and we are in pain, but we would rather let the world see us smile. . . . we would rather wear the mask. </li></ul>LOURDES R.
