This document presents a novel low-cost optical imaging system to monitor the plasma arc welding process without additional lighting sources. It introduces a camera calibration method using images of a checkerboard pattern. The camera is mounted on a CNC machine and its position is calibrated by moving it relative to the fixed checkerboard pattern. Experiments test measuring the width of the weld bead during welding. Results show the system can effectively measure weld pool geometry under the bright plasma arc lighting conditions.
