Passive voice
Use of the passive voice
• It is used when we want to give more
importance to action.
Example:
Active voice
He ate all of the cookies.
Passive voice
All of the cookies were eaten.
Grammatical Rules
• The passive voice with the auxiliary verb "to
be" and the past participle of the verb forms.
Example:
The speech is written for the president.
Subject + auxiliary verb (“To be”) +
past participle
Uses
• We use the passive where you don't hnow who
performed the action.
Example:
A civilian has been killed.
• We use the passive where you want to give
more importance to what happened, that who
performed the action and when not to say who
did.
Example:
The letter was delivered yesterday.
Sentences from active to passive
Active. Bartholdi designed the Statue of Liberty.
Passive: The Statue of Liberty was designed
by Bartholdi.
Active. The French gave the statue
to the U.S. in 1886.
Passive: The statue was given to the U.S. by the
French in 1886.
Active: They use the yen in Japan.
Passive: The yen is used in Japan.
