THE UNITED KINGDOM OF GREATBRITAIN AND NORTHERN IRELAND MAP HISTORY • The name United Kingdom refers to the union of what were once four seperate countries: Scotland, England, Wal es and Ireland (only Northern Ireland remains part of the UK)
SCOTLAND • Its capital is Edinburgh. • Scotland is famous for its lochs (lakes) – there are over 600 square miles of them. One of the most famous is Loch Ness. • It is also famous for its clans, kilts, medieval castles, as well as poetry and songs of Robert Burns.

WALES • Wales (Cymru in Welsh) is a mountainous country on the western side of Great Britain. The Capital City is Cardiff. • The national game of Wales is Rugby. • The highest point is Snowdon (1,085 m), the longest river is Towy (103 km) and the Bala is the largest lake (4.4 sq Km).
NORTHERN IRELAND • The capital and largest city of Northern Ireland is Belfast which is surrounded by heavy industries including shipbuilding and textiles. • Ireland is separated from Great Britain by the Irish Sea. The island is politically divided into two parts: the Republic of Ireland or Eire and Northern Ireland which is part of the United Kingdom.
