GENERAL INFOS AND APPLICATION ENVIRONMENT
With this simple procedure we will show how to
configuring virtual switch VLAN tagging in VST (Virtual
Switch Tagging) Mode on a VMware ESXi host.
In our example we will assume a network scenario with
two VMware ESXi hosts, each with two NICs connecting to
the Cisco switch.
This network configuration is used for isolation and
segmentation of virtual machine network traffic; the
supported VLAN range is 1-4094 (VLAN ID). If VLAN ID is
equal to 0 (zero), we disables VLAN tagging on port group
(EST Mode); if VLAN ID is equal to 4095, we enables
trunking on port group (VGT Mode).
The network environment is shown in the picture.

Configuring virtual switch VLAN tagging (VST Mode)
CONFIGURING vSWITCH VLAN TAGGING (VST MODE)
Highlight the host and click the Configuration tab
Click the Networking link and then click Properties
Click the virtual switch/portgroups in the Ports tab and
click Edit
Click the General tab
Assign a VLAN number in VLAN ID
Click the NIC Teaming tab
From the Load Balancing dropdown, choose Route based on
originating virtual port ID
Verify that there is at least one network adapter listed under
Active Adapters
Verify the VST configuration using the ping command to
confirm the connection between the ESXi host and the
gateway interfaces and another host on the same VLAN

CONFIGURING VLAN TAGGING WITH CLI
1. To create a new portgroup to the virtual switch, use the command:
esxcfg-vswitch -A "portgroup_name" virtual_switch_name
2. To configure VLAN tagging, use the command:
esxcfg-vswitch -p "portgroup_name" -v VLAN_ID virtual_switch_name
For example, to add a new virtual portgroup VLAN220, use the command:
esxcfg-vswitch -A VLAN220 vSwitchX
For example, to assigning a VLAN 220 to this a virtual portgroup, use the command:
esxcfg-vswitch -p VLAN220 -v 220 vSwitchX
portgroup name
virtual switch name
vlan ID

CISCO TRUNK PORT CONFIGURATION WITH CLI
1. To configuring Trunk Port on Cisco Switch, use the command:
interface GigabitEthernet1/2
switchport
switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
switchport trunk allowed vlan 10-100
switchport mode trunk
switchport nonegotiate
no ip address
no cdp enable
spanning-tree portfast trunk
Set to layer 2 switching
ESXi only supports dot1q
Allowed VLAN to ESXi
Set to Trunk Mode
DTP is not supported
ESXi supports CDP
Allows the port to start
forwarding packets
immediately on linkup
