  9. 9. Interactive Scotland’s client base Overview From gaming to BAFTA award-winning film and video production, the Interactive Scotland (IS) client base has gained global recognition in delivering leading- edge digital media products and services. With over 600 companies employing 8,000 plus digital experts generating revenues in the region of £0.5BN, the IS client base works with a number of public, private and third sector clients with government (helping make more public services available online) and food and drink (working with clients on customer experience and digital brand) considered key growth markets. Although Scotland has a strong reputation in the gaming sector, Interactive Scotland clients work across a number of sub- sectors. Those are Gaming; Publishing; Animation; Music; Advertising & Marketing; Film & Video; Broadcast; Digital Technology; Digital Design; and Software & New Media. The proliferation of mobile devices (smartphones and tablet computers) is stimulating the development of new apps and innovation in the use of digital technologies – particularly in consumer-led industries. Alongside government and food and drink, rapid growth is expected in financial services and retail. Since there is a strong financial services sector in Scotland, this is expected to present opportunities for the development of new applications and services. Organisations with skills in gaming, software & new media, animation and digital technologies are expected to benefit. Depending on the sector, Interactive Scotland clients cluster around three main cities: Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dundee. Broadcast and film clients can generally be found in Glasgow. The majority of gaming companies are based in Dundee. And marketing and advertising companies gather in Edinburgh. Helped by Scotland’s universities, producing high-calibre graduates and delivering the latest thinking, IS advertising and marketing companies have built a strong reputation for creativity supported by a cluster of creative design and video production firms. IS’s film and video clients have key strengths in CGI alongside pre- and post-production technologies. And their software and new media clients are well-renowned for their creativity and front-end solutions.
  10. 10. Why Scotland? Key components of the success of the client base are its reputation, its ability to collaborate and a heritage dating back to the early 1970s. Working from a low cost base, the Interactive Scotland client base has a strong track record in client delivery. They understand how to respond to market demand, working closely with buyers who look to SMEs to provide the leading-edge expertise that they require. It is this combination of low cost, reputation for project delivery and leading- edge expertise that limits customer churn, builds their knowledge and because of their partnership approach to client management, they continue to develop market-led solutions. Inter-connected through geography, there is a very strong eco-system of companies collaborating. (You will note from figure 1 that our clients tend to cluster in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dundee). Beartrap Games for example partnered with Leith Agency to develop a game for Home Energy Scotland – a government-backed campaign to help people keep their homes warm during winter. Universities engage with the sector through KTPs (Knowledge Transfer Partnerships) and all of their computer science departments are connected together through SICSA (Scottish Informatics and Computer Science Alliance), which allows expertise to be matched between universities and companies. As the technology market in Scotland shifted from electronics in the 1970s to digital media from early 2000s, so too did the key players, easing the transition from electronics to digital media. It follows therefore, that the bulk of the angel investors came from electronics, re-investing their earnings into the digital media sector. Why Scotland? Reputation, collaboration and evolution Figure 1: Map showing IS client clusters

  13. 13. Gaming sector overview Scotland is a world leader in Gaming and Interactive Software, ranked as a top European games developer destination in an industry estimated to contribute £61M to our economy. Although tablet and smart phone use is expected to rise significantly over the next 3-5 years, spurring growth in demand for apps ad associated services, console gaming is expected to overtake mobile gaming by 2017, fuelled by the arrival of new consoles, such as the PS4 and Xbox One. Interactive Scotland works with 30 gaming sector companies who are well-placed to take advantage of the trends in UK and global gaming. With a reported 200+ employees generating reported revenues of over £10M, they have skills and expertise in MMO, educational, social, mobile and console gaming in addition to supporting the sector through audio services and core game component optimisation. Working with global brands including Guinness, VISA and Honda as well as serving B2C markets, IS clients are evenly distributed between Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dundee, close to universities – West of Scotland; Caledonian; Napier; and Abertay – each with first class computer gaming programmes. This provides gaming companies with the skills and talent vital to their industry. Interactive Scotland clients are well-renowned for their creativity, innovation and collaboration. Lucky Frame (recently acquired by Blazin Griffin) an Edinburgh-based iPhone app, desktop software and games developer were recently awarded a BAFTA for their satirical game, Bad Hotel. Beartrap Games partnered with Leith Agency to develop a game for Home Energy Scotland – a government-backed campaign to help people keep their homes warm during winter. And Monster Legacy, a title developed by Dundee-based Outplay Entertainment, featured as an Editor’s Choice in Apple’s App Store in 49 countries. 25. 25. Publishing overview There are few sectors to be impacted by digital media as much as the publishing sector. The Internet has disrupted the business of publishing ‒ books, magazines and newspapers ‒ for the past decade or more. The general principles remain however - so authors, editors, distributors and publishers continue to play a pivotal role. To this end, there are a host of world-renowned publishers located in Scotland taking advantage of the convergence of and the skills in both digital and publishing. There are 36 publishing companies in IS's client base with over 150 employees generating revenues in excess of £8M. Although principally targeting the B2C market, IS's publishing companies deliver solutions to B2B clients including the BBC; Penguin Books and Sony Records. And with skills in print and content creation, Interactive Scotland's publishing clients increasingly look to digital media to drive their content forward. The 1.6M readers of award-winning publisher, The List can access content through a website built in responsive design providing a first-rate mobile experience. The Newspaper Club has developed a software tool to allow users to generate their own newspaper. And Clash Music is an independent media group with established platforms in both print and digital media, which has helped them win a host of awards. Digital media will continue to play central role in publishing with the increasing number of e-readers, e-books and tablets through to the advent of Google Glass and wearable technologies and the possibilities that will bring to the use of big data. There are many possibilities. Award-winning Newspaper Club has printed over 4M newspapers – more than the circulation of The Sun 4 Million! Read All About It! The List has 1.6M unique users – more than the population of Glasgow and Edinburgh combined! 

  45. 45. Advertising & Marketing overview Just shortly after their IPO in 2012, Facebook saw a dip in share price as markets got jittery about their ability to make the most of mobile ad revenues. Today, their market capitalisation is at an all-time-high, fuelled by mobile ad revenue and profitability. The importance of digital marketing and advertising will only increase with tablet and smart phone use expected to rise significantly over the next 3-5 years. This is compounded by ever-declining print advertising spend - expected to reduce by around one fifth of current levels by 2017. By contrast, UK mobile ad spending, more than doubled to over £1BN in 2013. Overall, digital ad spending is expected to increase by 44% to £9BN in the next four years. Mobile ad spending will have quadrupled in this time. Interactive Scotland has 33 companies who get the digital marketing and advertising space.
