Qīngmíng ShànghéTú 清明上河圖Arts ofChinese PaintingIntermediate mid/ high Grade 12（APLevel ）Students in Dr. Tan’s class watch a Youtubevideo interview of Yu Zheng, the chiefdesigner of the animated QīngmíngShànghétú 清明上河圖at the 2010 ShanghaiWorld Expo to pique their interest in thisfamous painting from China and the use oftechnology to make is come to life.
Teacher then briefly introduces different styles ofChinese painting, such as 山水畫、花鳥畫、人物畫、動物畫、風俗畫and provides ample examplesfor students to name/identify the styles of thosepaintings and their key features and characteristics.Teacher then introduces a multimedia QīngmíngShànghétú清明上河圖visually and encouragesstudents make keen observations and to interpretthe visual information. Teacher then guidesstudents in reading an article 《一幅名揚中外的畫》(authentic material) to help students furtherunderstand 清明上河圖.
Students then in small groups(each group is assigned adifferent portion of the painting)and work together to come upwith the description of their partof the painting and makepresentation to the whole class.
Students play 20 questions by choosingone group of characters or animals fromtheir portion of the painting and write adetailed description of their actions andlocations and submit it to the teacherbeforehand. The rest of the class ask thegroup questions and try to find out whatcharacters or the animals the group has inmind (only Yes or No questions allowed).The group that has asked the fewestquestions before getting the correctanswer wins.
Students imagine and recreate the lives ofcharacters shown on the painting throughthought and speech bubbles. They can usefree software to dub their voices into multi-media picture stories. They can also imaginethemselves as a time traveler who justarrived and spent a spring day in the capitalcity and write a letter to his/her Chinesebusiness partner who lives in the SouthernChina and has never been to the capital city.
Extension:Students form into small interestgroups, conduct research in one of thefollowing areas--to do more detailedinterpretation of the painting compare andcontrast 清明上河图 with another art workfrom other parts of the world, to doresearch on the life in the Northern Songcapital as captured in the QīngmíngShànghétú.
Such as urban planning aspect, (studentscompare and contrast key features of aChinese architecture as shown in thepainting, gardens, bridges, home and officialoffice buildings), means of transportation(variety kinds animal drawn carts, ships andboats), economic activities (shops, hotelsand so on), fashion and entertainments andso on.
They have to find evidence in the painting itselfas well as other disciplines (such ashistory, science, arts, economics and so son).They make a presentation on their research to thewhole class.As the final project of this unit, students are ask tobe Zhang Zeduan of Washington DC or theirown home town to design a poster that reflect thelives of own community (city/town) and promotethe harmonious relationship among its residentsand between nature and human beings.
They can use multimediasoftware, paint, do a collage or writetheir own “风俗画” in words and posttheir art work and Chinese introductionof their art work and collage or theirwritten description of the their owncommunity and send their work to localChinese newspaper if there is one, totheir Chinese exchange school e-pals forfeedback and to exhibit their posters inthe local public library.
ReflectionStudents viewed the interview of the designer ofanimated Qīngmíng Shànghétú 清明河上圖andlistened to different styles of Chinese paintingexplained by the teacher. Students further theirinterpretive communication through the viewingof 清明上河圖 and reading of 《一幅名揚中外的畫》. Students, in small groups, discuss theirassignment in details about what was depicted inthe painting first, and prepare for their recreationof contemporary life based on the painting toaccomplish interpersonal communication.
Students will use their creativity torecreate a context of ‘modern’ lifebased on the life of 清明河上圖. Inthese activities, the skills ofcollaborations, and creative skillsare incorporated along with mediaand technology skills of the 21stCentury Skills.
