The  system  describes  in  a  general  sense  the  patented  design  of  a  warning  system  that  is  owned  by  NFA  Innova;ons  Pty.  Ltd.  and  is  subject  maAer  of     Interna;onal  patent  WO2008019424  and  EP2054866  ,  Australian  Patent  Au2006203590  ,  US  Patent  applica;on  12/310117,  Canadian  patent  applica;on  2660965,   European  patent  applica;on  07784749.9,  PCT/AU2010/000826,  provisional  patents  2012903620;  2009201730  and  20088202112,  and  the  copyright  of  NFA  Pty  Ltd.   No  reproduc;on  is  allowed  without  the  express  permission  of  the  Patent  Owner  NFA  Pty  Ltd.   Level Crossing Safety - Complex Issues, one Clear Solution.
  2. 2. nfainnovations   “A  safe  land  transport  system  that  meets  mobility,  social  and  economic  objec;ves  with  maximum  safety  for  its  users”   Goals
  3. 3. Rail  Level   Crossings  remain   a  high-‐risk   interface  between   rail  and  other   modes  of  surface   transport ..may  not  be  tomorrow   nfainnovations
  4. 4. nfainnovations   Fatal  accidents  at  level  crossings  are  caused  most  frequently   by  inadvertent  driver  error  (ATSB,  2002).
  5. 5. The  challenge  has   been  to   understand  why   motorists  do  not   give  way  to  trains ..may  not  be  tomorrow   nfainnovations
  6. 6. Root causes – Ina$en&onal  Blindness  –  whereby  absence  of  aAen;on  leads  to  a   failure  to  perceive  an  object  that  is  in  plain  sight   – Expecta&on  –  it  is  well  known  that  expecta;on  guides  our  behaviour,   some;mes  more  strongly  that  environmental  s;muli   – Perceptual  Limita&ons  –  whilst  we  as  humans  gather  the  majority  of   our  informa;on  through  visual  percep;on,  our  vision  systems  are   subject  to  interference  from  common  environmental  factors  such  as   sun  glare.     – Speed  and  Distance  Percep&on  –     nfainnovations
  7. 7. If  driver  error  is  the  cause  of  these  accidents,  then  any   solu;on  must  specifically  target  these  issues   nfainnovations
  8. 8. Why audible warning? – A  vocal  warning  in  addi;on  to  a  visual  warning  =  6x  more  likely  to   result  in  compliance  than  a  visual  warning  alone  (Wogalter,  Rashid,  Clarke,  &  Kalsher,  1991;  Wogalter  &  Young,   1991).  Wogalter,  et  al.  (1991)   nfainnovations
  9. 9. RBI over-rides radio to deliver messages nfainnovations   Volume  level  is   controlled  75  dB(A)   also  over-‐rides   CD/MP3/Bluetooth  etc   Radio  Break-‐in   s;ll  works  when  radio  is  off
