U-Engage is the first-year seminar program at OSU. These are paraphrases of the 3 learning outcomes. Student projects/ assignments vary widely. Image on the right is one example – a student-created walking tour developed with much help and guidance from Archivist Natalia Fernandez.
WR 121 is OSU’s required first-year composition course. Library/ Writing partnership since 2000. Many barriers to overcome teaching this course. The final product has changed significantly in the last 3 years – from a traditional argument paper to a researched rhetorical analysis.
In 2013, while the old assignments were still in use, an assessment project for this course sent us down the path that I’m going to talk about today: One of the goals in this course was to model an exploratory, open-minded research process for students. This assessment project showed that this was not happening. Major gap = curiosity.
First-year students are managing so much that is new. Asking them to embrace uncertainty in the classroom is asking a lot.
PIL also useful – topic selection is hugely fraught
Metaphor students use = gambling
Curiosity in graded assignments
Curiosity – motivation – learning is a tangled knot
Shift to things we did – types of curiosity. Self-assessment.
How it works.
Types = epistemic. Sparked by a desire to know. How things work (concrete and abstract)
Perceptual – desire to feel, taste, touch, hear, etc.
Interpersonal – sparked by interactions with other people
Scoring is extremely limited in utility – self assessment, that’s it.
