This document discusses taking library staff on an information literacy journey. It aims to develop creativity through information literacy projects, foster partnerships between teams, and build confidence among library staff. The goal is to better develop and support information literacy in both students and staff by increasing their own information literacy. Usage of the library's referencing resources has increased, allowing staff to focus on more difficult inquiries. The library also has an education image gallery covering various topics for use in learning, teaching and research.

Editor's Notes
Last year’s LILAC – disconnect between issue desk and academic staff
Intros- LJ LAW and GF CCI
Journey already begun – move away from worthy events traditionally and institutionally focussed.
Uni moving ahead, new staff, TC/GF and AFLs and issue desk staff not afraid to put forward ideas
So, this presentation shows how UoP drawn upon these things and through a series of IL projects has embarked upon its voyage to develop creativity….. to result in a more holistic service towards supporting and developing IL in our staff (library and teaching) and students.
Shift from reactive to proactive
Destination information – RGs paper. Picking up on Coffee Mornings and some facts around who is attending.
GF in the baseroom frustrated why aren’t staff asking me anything! LJ in one of the groups getting sucked in by the deadline and the sense of ‘good enough’, quick results on Google
Coffee Mornings to carry on the good work.
Notes around attendance for numbers at coffee mornings not kept as essentially they are informal and drop in sessions to just turn up on the day - however numbers have increased to approximately 20 at each session, often more if you consider room sizes with a good cross of staff from professionals to front line support staff and tech services staff - also more sharing of information and cascading.
Controlled creativity – first glimpse of creativity borne out of a very practical idea. Consistent approach for staff, students and library staff.
Growing number of hits, promotion at conferences, external bodies using the service.
How can we build on its success?
Currently working on a project to use this kind of decision making tree for answering subject/ resource type enquirires.
Moving on from controlled creativity to …
to much more ambitious and adventurous creativity. Frustration around selecting what to choose as nuggets.
See proposal and update papers.
Martin Hampton’s external questioning useful
Proactive in providing something for the VLE
One I helped to develop and how I’ve used it for teaching – adaptability.
Interactive, Ppoint slides and text based handout. This one is perhaps the most visual.
The databases we talked about in the nugget were also given a page, which we decided not to use in the final version – but will use on our web pages and in the Victory repository.
Promoting at L&T Conference. Activity.
outcomes encouraging us to look again at our IL Framework and involve teaching staff in that redevelopment rather than by simply presenting it to them.
Negatives – Extra work – reassess our priorities
Delicate negotiations across teams
Over-enthusiastic staff balance of work
No university policy on Web 2.0
Technical issues – reliance on our personal web-guru – on maternity leave so working with Uni web team – communicating to them with relatively little knowledge about what to ask for.
Learning to use different software e.g. captivate – time but a positive outcome in the end – or working with others with the technical skill, but without the library knowledge.
Positives
Learning new skills
Internal benefits of a more holistic approach to working – peer learning, project teams across various grades of staff and teams.
Benefits for those undertaking NVQs, chartership and so on – desire for staff development
Underlying change of ethos in ‘conservative’ library staff
Proactive rather than reactive and keeping ahead of Uni’s strategy
Sharing and working across the organisation
Raised profile – e.g. Press office contacting RG and asking if we had anyone who’s really good at web searching on the staff to give a training session.
Things to share across the Uni - Faculty meetings of Faculty L&T conferences
Interdepartmental collaboration – Faculty, marketing, ask, foundation direct, media services, marketing
External fame from Referencing @Port.
Development of Fold it to find it – perhaps demonstrates that we reached our destination when group was gathering ideas in the staff room and everyone there was interested and contributing. Horizons constantly shifting though so the projects must continue – next year’s summer event may be talking more about e-learning.
Other things – Uni Library extension – building as showcase, combined with TCs interest in Second Life and virtual things led our involvement in Prep-up. See where we sit with facebook and the Union. Staff setting this up came to the Library for advice on setting up a group on Facebook
Showcasing the building, but our services too.
Enabling students and parents to see what’s on offer before they come.
Here’s Chapter Runo, ie Timothy Collinson, Faculty, Librarian Technology, showing us aournd a computing students project on developing a Library in Second Life – maybe we will build on it?
Developing out of the summer event 2007 – hitchhikers guide to Web 2.0 type things.
Keen staff getting involved – even the librarian using a pseudonym helped to perpetuate the daily feeds on this.
Dabbling in facebook. 318 fans at the moment – developments planned. Keen and enthusiastic staff doing the work
Dalek - Facebook link - become a friend of the red dalek on facebook.
Library assistants first getting involved at this level following the Brewerton summer event.
Success of quizzes – book token vs. Nintendo DS.
LJ wanting to re-use and adapt ‘Murder in the Library’
The Library or is it? Lots of students wanting to join the Pirate society – good rapport built at early stages of students career – inspiring and creative library and staff. Building ‘awsome’ and inviting so we have a good entry to inspire through Info Literacy. Will the creativity keep flowing?
