Posts recent advance/ orthodontic continuing education

  1. 1. INDIAN DENTAL ACADEMY Leader in continuing dental education
  2. 2. Recent Advances in Posts
  3. 3. Contents • Introduction • Objectives of Post • Types of Post • Bio-mechanical Principles of Post Selection -Form of Post -Surface Texture -Importance of Post Length • Cast Post • Stainless Steel post
  4. 4.
  5. 5. • Endo Post • Recent Posts - Composi Post - Flexi Post - Ceramic Post - Luscent Anchor Post Technique Conclusion Acknowledgements
  6. 6. Introduction • The Post Endodontic Treatment of Teeth Presents the Dental Practitioner With the Dilemma of Selecting From a Large Array of Materials, techniques and Designs. • In Addition, increasingly sophisticated Dental Materials Constantly Are Being Introduced Serving to Alter Not Only the Procedure, but the Very Paradigms of Treatment.
  7. 7. Objectives of Post • Aid in Retaining a Core to Restore Lost Tooth Structure for Retention of a Restoration. • Select a Post System That Provides Maximum Retention, Yet Removes As Little As Possible of the Remaining Subgingival Tooth Structure.
  8. 8. Types of Post • Tapered , Smooth-sided Post System • Parallel –Sided , serrated & Vented Post System • Tapered , Self –Threading Post System • Parallel –Sided , threaded Post System • Parallel – Sided , threaded , Split-shank Post System
  9. 9. Bio –mechanical principles of post selection Form of post • Parallel Posts Are More Retentive Than Tapered Posts. • Parallel Posts Resist Tensile , Shear and Torquing Forces Better Than Tapered Posts and Distribute Stress More Evenly Along Their Length During Function, providing Greater Protection Against Dentin Failure.
  10. 10. Surface Texture • Has a Dramatic Effect on Retention & Stress Distribution. • Retention Decreases As One Progresses From Threaded to Serrated to Smooth Surface Configurations. Importance of Post Length • Increasing post length has a direct affect on retention • Increasing post length has a significant effect on stress distribution • A reduction of compression and shear concentrations occurs with increased post length
  11. 11. Cast Post • Only system that can achieve accurate adaptation to all root canal configurations • Least retentive of all post • Generates high levels of wedging stress • Indicated when canal system has been over prepared / in incomplete root
  12. 12. Stainless steel post • Posts are available in wrought, precious & non-precious alloys. • Can be used with a variety of direct and indirect techniques
  13. 13. Endopost • High fusing precious metal alloy • It was the first of the practical manufactured aids to post fabrication that consistently & reliably afforded post length and fit
  14. 14. Composi post • Carbon fiber reinforced root canal post. • In 1990 Duet et al,described a non- metallic material for the fabrication of posts based on the carbon-fiber reinforcement principle. • Carbon fiber posts are made of unidirectional carbon fibers embedded in an epoxy
  15. 15. • Wide variety of posts are available and include parallel- sided, tapered smooth & serrated forms • Esthetic versions of this post have a quartz exterior that makes the post tooth colored. • These post have a high tensile strength and modulus of elasticity similar to dentin, has the lowest values for stiffness, elastic limit, and strength of the post.
  16. 16. Flexi –Post • Flexi-post is the patented split-shanked,parallel- threaded posts. • Achieves maximum retention with minimal stress • Split-shank design absorbs stress of insertion by gradually closing under pressure. The post conforms & adapts to the root rather than the root adapting to the post.
  17. 17. • Based on the studies “The flexi post system displayed twice the retention of the other systems evaluated” • Retention comparable to natural dentin with minimal insertional & functional stress. • Available in five sizes 00,0,1,2,3.
  18. 18. Ceramic post • Advantages Esthetics • Dis-advantages Cost Long term data are limited Ceramic materials may have a tendency to fracture • Indications Teeth requiring very translucent all-ceramic crowns • Contra-indications Metallic ceramic crown is
  19. 19. Luscent Anchor Post Technique • The luscent anchor post (Dentatus) is a fiber glass, clear resin post • It is designed to refract & transmit natural tooth colors for esthetic post & foundations. • Is Radiolucent • Designed to be placed passively in prepared canals • Available in 3 diameters.
  20. 20. Parapost Fiber White Technique • A filled resin,mono-directional fibers matrix with a flexural modulus that very closely approximates that of the natural dentin • White translucent • Available in four diameters
  21. 21. • Zirconium post • Light cure composite post
  22. 22. conclusion • Research on the biomechanics of posts and cores over the past decade has replaced many of our traditional ideas with data that more clearly direct the dentist as to how and when to best restore these teeth. • Patients have benefited from recent developments in post and core technology and continue to reap the benefits of research & development.
