  • Breakthrough image processing algorithms
    As you can probably imagine, the Lava COS is a sophisticated device. Let’s take a minute though and talk specifically about the technology. A technology we refer to as 3D-In-Motion. This device is a combination of unique and innovative technology, sophisticated hardware and software and real time modeling.

  • Let’s switch gears before we finish up. There are some imaging products on the market that will try to differentiate themselves on the basis that you do not have to powder the teeth.
    The COS requires a light dusting of powder. The powder simply offers contrast points for scanning. These points create reference points to enhance the 3D surface models. Another way to describe the effect that powder has is to say it boosts the signal of the surface anatomy so the lenses can better capture the images. Our light dusting can be accomplished in as little as 15 seconds for a quad restoration.
    The objective of the powdering technique for CEREC is to actually opaque the teeth. Opaqueing of the teeth requires a lot of powder. Further it can be fairly technique sensitive. You can see examples of this in the pictures on the slide.

    Moving on to a second benefit: Quality
    How many of you do Lava restorations? Why do you choose to do a Lava restoration? Lava crowns and bridges represent high quality and they are enabled by digital technology.
    Let’s look at another technology—digital radiography. How many of you have digital x-ray systems in your office? There are now nearly 50,000 digital x-ray systems on the market. Digital radiography is a higher quality product in that it exposes patients to less radiation and allows a dentist to do so much more with the images (data) that has been captured.
    One of the greatest benefits of the COS is that it provides a more pleasant patient experience. Patients prefer a digital impression with the Lava COS over a traditional impression.
    Another benefit is improved communication. Improved communication between doctor and patient and improved communication between doctor and lab.
    A Lava COS scan provides the opportunity to review the finished scan with the patient on the display monitor while the patient is still in the chair.
    Communication between you and your lab can also be improved. Discrepancies can be identified and managed much differently using digital technology.
    Accessibility. One of the biggest misnomers we face with potential customers is that because the device is named the Lava chairside oral scanner, it can only be used for Lava restorations. This is not the case at all. Although, the Lava COS will become the face of Lava in the future. The COS allows your lab to make traditional PFMs as well as Lava and will be selectively open to qualified CAD/CAM systems in the future.
    Productivity - With proper training (which we will provide) the Lava COS has the potential to reduce chair time.
  • Let’s walk though how this process would work for a traditional PFM.
    Once the prescription is filled out and the digital file is uploaded to your laboratory, the lab uses Lava COS software to digitally mark the margins and cut the dies. This software is a significant breakthrough in communications with your lab. It puts the dental technician inside the mouth. Let’s take a quick look at how this is done.

  • The data is then sent back to 3M where the puzzle pieces are put together. In a largely automated process, the bite scan is aligned with the operative and opposing.
    The models are digitally ditched, and now the virtual model is now complete and is ready for model manufacturing.

  • Once the model is fabricated, the lab receives the cut model and opposing already articulated and a separate solid “check” model.
  • In the traditional PFM workflow once the lab receives the model from our model manufacturing partner, the building of the restoration can begin in much the same way it is done with stone models today.
  • So the virtual model is complete and now can be sent for model production. There is no pouring of plaster in the digital workflow. The models are developed using a process called stereolithography, a rapid prototyping technology used successfully in other industries.

  • Another truly exciting and efficient workflow is the workflow for Lava Zirconia.
    The first three steps are the same. After the dentist takes the digital impression(1), the lab margin marks and virtually defines the die cuts(2), 3M ESPE once again puts the pieces of the puzzle together by aligning the bite registration with the operative and opposing (3). At this point in the Lava workflow, the virtual model in Step 3 is simultaneously sent to the Lava system and to our model manufacturing partner. So while the coping is being milled the model is also being manufactured at a separate location. So the coping is being made at the same time the model is. They simply meet at the finish line (overlaying of porcelain). The lab no longer needs a model to mill a Lava coping since the digital data is available.
