  3. 3. Indiacarez.com Objective of the Kyphoplasty Procedure Kyphoplasty is a procedure used to restore the strength andyp op asty s a p ocedu e used to esto e t e st e gt a d height of a collapsed or fractured vertebra by infusing bone cement in the affected vertebra. It is mainly indicated in elderly patients suffering from weak and brittle bones due to osteoporosis.p Osteoporosis is a disease of the old age in which the bones become weak and brittle due to lack of calcium and are vulnerable to fractures even with trivial trauma. The vertebral column is most susceptible to such osteoporotic fractures as it bears the entire weight of the upper body while doing any small or big task. The aim of Kyphoplasty is to reduce the pain of fractured vertebra, to reinforce the weakened bone and to Get Free opinion , restore normal vertebral height. 4. 4. Indiacarez.com Objective of the Kyphoplasty Procedure Relevant Anatomy :- The vertebral column consists of 33 small bones called vertebra. Each vertebra has a basic structure i i f b d t i l (i f t) d t b l hcomprising of a body anteriorly (in front) and a vertebral arch posteriorly (behind). The vertebral arch consists of two transverse processes that project sideways, two pedicles (flat bone between body and transverse process), lamina (flat arched b b t th t d th i )bone between the transverse process and the spinous process) and the spinous process (backward projection). The vertebral arch encloses the spinal canal which lodges the spinal cord. 5. 5. Indiacarez.com How is Kyphoplasty Performed ? Kyphoplasty is performed under local or general anesthesia. U i i id t ll i i i d dUsing image guidance x-rays, two small incisions are made and a probe is placed into the vertebral space where the fracture is located. The bone is drilled and a balloon, called a bone tamp, is inserted on each side. These balloons are then inflated with t t di til th d t th d i d h i ht dcontrast medium until they expand to the desired height and removed. The balloon does not remain in the patient. It simply creates a cavity for the cement and also helps expand the compressed bone. The spaces created by the balloons are then filled with PMMA, the same orthopaedic cement used in vertebroplasty, binding the fracture. The cement hardens quickly, providing strength d t bilit t th t b t i h i ht d li i Get Free opinion and stability to the vertebra, restoring height, and relieving pain.
