Why are we doing all this? <ul><li>Because God – Bible - says we should </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Obedience to a revealed truth </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>“the stick” </li></ul></ul><ul><li>To make the world a better place </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Building toward the reign of God </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>“the carrot” </li></ul></ul>

  6. 6. Promise: The Beginning of the Good <ul><li>Before there was the Law to obey </li></ul><ul><li>Before there was a vision of God’s Kingdom that we were called to create </li></ul><ul><li>There was covenant </li></ul><ul><li>A relationship based on promise </li></ul>

Promise = Covenant <ul><li>“ Berith” – Covenant </li></ul><ul><li>God to Noah: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>“ I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.&quot; - Gen. 9:11 </li></ul></ul>

Promise = Covenant <ul><li>God to Abram: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, &quot;To your descendants I give this land…” Gen. 15:18 </li></ul></ul><ul><li>God to Moses: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>10 Commandments, the Law = terms of covenant relationship </li></ul></ul><ul><li>The rest is elaboration </li></ul>

Promise = Covenant = Love <ul><li>Hebrew: </li></ul><ul><li>“ chesed” – covenant faithfulness </li></ul><ul><li>“ ahava” – Commandment to love God &quot;with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your might&quot; (Deut. 6:5) </li></ul><ul><li>How is love commanded? </li></ul><ul><li>We love God by following the promises we have made </li></ul>
