In 2001, in the USA there was a unique case of a complete fire extinguishing in the oil tank with a diameter of 82 meters. Standard fire system was not worked. For the preparation of non-standard fire-extinguishing tactic was spent 12 hours precious time. We performed some tests and calculations as we can extinguish the same fire today with the use of new firefighting technologies.

Standard fire system was not worked. For the preparation of non-standard fire-extinguishing tactic was spent 12 hours precious time. Thanks to the heroism of top-professional firefighters that used of non-standard tactic and fire was extinguished before to the complete combustion of the tank and oil.

PROBLEM Official quote from the ORION firefighting description: In 2001, a new break through was gained when the Orion fire, tank diameter 82,4 m (270 ft), was successfully extinguished in 65 minutes using an application rate of 8,55 L/m2/min. It is important to realize that fighting this size of fire places enormous stress on all links in the chain of events leading to extinguishment. The application rate of 8,55 L/m2/min equals a flow rate of about 45000 L/min. Using 3 % proportioning 1350 L/min of foam concentrate is consumed. The need for large-scale equipment, very good logistics, high quality foam and a well-coordinated operation becomes very imperative.

Therefore, if we cannot get the good result from use standard foam we must change the engineering approach to a combination of technologies to achieve the objective – extinguish the fire. There is no rule that specify we need to use one and only one technology to put out a fire. In fact it is just the opposite. Every NFPA Codes has an equivalency clause that states: “Nothing in this code is intended to restrict equal or better form of protection than what is called for in the code”
  8. 8. SOLUTION Really intensity extinguishing new generation ISAS-7500 system for a of tank of 20 000 m3. ISAS-7500 tester tank with used bloc consist from four ISAS-7500 cylinder and used ring pipeline without special nozzles. Mirror 1 200 m2. Intensity 640 lminm2 for amount special compressed foam. or 22.4 lminm2 amount used water and foam concentrate for create special compressed foam. Extinguishing time – 27 seconds also 5 second for preparation. Total time for extinguishing – 32 seconds. For 100% extinguishing was used 400 000 liters foam.

  10. 10. RESEARH AND SUMMARY Calculated forecast fire extinguishing ORION tank with use bloc with eight ISAS- 7 500 adapted for ORION tank condition. 1. Mirror 5 330 m2 2. Intensity 337 lminm2 for amount special compressed foam or 11,25 lminm2 amount used water and foam concentrate for create special compressed foam. 3. Extinguishing time ~ 60 seconds and 5 second for prepare. Total time 65 seconds. 4. Total will use 1 800 000 liters special compressed foam or 60 000 liters mixture waterfoam concentrate. NOTE ABOUT SPECIAL PRESSURE FOAM: The foam created and prepare for extinguishing inside the cylinder by work pressure generator. The foam creates under high pressure, and oxygen inside the foam is replaced with inert gas. To the fire zone deliver compressed foam without oxygen, for this reason the foam not destroy under fire and the foam has a high firefighting property.
  11. 11. RESEARH AND SUMMARY Features of the new generation of foam: 1. High density. 2. Absence of oxygen. 3. Presence of fire extinguishing aerosol. 4. Presence of neutral gases. 5. Small amount of water. The reason of the phenomenon - a new generation of foam with higher resistance to heat and hot gas streams. Foam instantly covers the area over fire and closes the access of oxygen for a long time. Possible use any foam from any country. High efficiency result - physical properties of the foam, not chemical composition only.
