In mid-2003, the band began recording songs for an album titled Cigarettes and Valentines. However, the master tracks were stolen and the band decided to start over rather than re-record Cigarettes and Valentines. The group decided to produce a rock opera, inspired by the work of The Who and several musicals. It follows the life of Jesus of Suburbia, a character with anti-hero image created by Billie Joe Armstrong. Following early recording at Studio 880 in Oakland, California, the band finished the album at Ocean Way Recording in Hollywood.
THE HARDSHIPS• After their 2008 album was released, Greenday went through a quiet period, which caused people to believe that they had broken up.• However Billie Joe Armstrong the leader of the band, said that the only way anyone was going to be leaving the band would be in a coffin.
