Bangladeshi muslims in new zealand

 1. 1. Bangladeshi Muslims in New Zealand
Created by Fariha Ahmed
2. 2. Which country and continent does the culture come from originally?
The culture of Bangladeshi Muslims originally came from Mecca, Saudi Arabia, and it is still the centre of Islam, which is the culture that most Bangladeshi people go with.
I’m doing this in Bangladeshi Muslims because most Bangladeshi are muslims: the PEW report for 2009 reported that there were 145,312,000 Muslims in Bangladesh which was 89.6% of the total population of Bangladesh.
Saudi Arabia had 24,949,000 Muslims which was 97% of the total Saudi Arabia population.
That means that Bangladesh had more than a hundred million more Muslims than Saudi Arabia, the home of Islam.
Next to the giant black box, is a stone, and Muslims believe if you kiss it, Allah (their god) will forgive you for all your sins...
The white stuff are all Muslims praying!
Stone
3. 3. How many people from this culture live in New Zealand?
The number of Bangladeshi people that are living in New Zealand has not been counted though I am certain that it is over 100.
The number of Muslims living in New Zealand was calculated in the PEW report 2009. There were about 37,000 Muslims here, which 0.9 of NZ’s population.
4. 4. How and why did people from this culture come to New Zealand?
People from all over Bangladesh moved to multi-cultural countries including America, Australia and New Zealand to make more money, live in a secure environment and adapt to a better lifestyle, so they can support a family...
5. 5. How do they practice their culture in New Zealand?
Speaking Bengali at home all the time
Having parties and gathering with other Bengali people.
Having monthly meetings to discuss Islam, and keeping their culture alive.
Having traditional Bengali weddings.
Wearing traditional clothes at home and to cultural gatherings.
Celebrating “Eid” (festival)
Going to mosques.
Traditional Clothing:
6. 6. Now on to..
My own questions:
7. 7. What are some ignored rules from the culture
Broken Rule 1:
Bangladeshi Muslims are not supposed to eat foods, or brush their teeth, or use products that have gelatine in them. Lots of foods that are sold here have at least a little gelatine in them. Some Bangladeshi Muslims that live in New Zealand don’t check the ingredients for products they buy and end up having something that they aren’t allowed to have. So yes, they can’t have a lot of nice food that you love. Also; they are also not allowed to eat pork, but most of them obey that rule since it is an easy food to evade.
NOT ALLOWED
NOT ALLOWED
8. 8. What are some ignored rules from the culture
Broken Rule 2:
This is what they are supposed to wear...
Another commonly ignored rule that applies to the women, is that they are supposed to wear clothing that covers their whole body. That means they’re supposed to cover their legs down to their ankles, cover their arms down to their wrist, and cover their body up to their necks, including their hair. So that means they basically have to cover themselves head to toe in loose clothing. Many women probably ignore this rule because its hard to fit in a multi cultural country when you stand out like that.
But they end up wearing stuff like this...
NOT ALLOWED
9. 9. What are prejudice stereotypes about Muslims?
A bunch of Muslim terrorists attacked America on 9/11 so now all Muslims are thought to be evil terrorists.
They have to be searched if someone has the same Muslim name as a terrorist in airports because of the fear of them being terrorists (sometimes officers at airports actually do that, mainly in America)...
Muslims ride camels while wearing turbans in the desert.
Terrorists are always Muslim (not true!), so in American movies Muslims are usually the terrorists (sometimes true).
