What are they for?• They are all around the country and most of the 2/5 of Netherlands is polderized.• If they weren’t drained, all they country would be flooded.• The main activity is agrarian one.• There are more than a million hectares which are polderized.• They’re managed by pumps or drainage canals.
  3. 3. Types of polders I• Pieces of sea which have been occupied by land.• Flood plains separated from the sea by a dike.• Reservoirs which are drained.
  4. 4. Types of polders II• Low lying polders: Low constant water levels are maintained because they are used in agriculture.• High lying polders: High constant water levels are maintained and they’re used in pasture areas.
  5. 5. The mills• They avoid the land from being flooded.• There are the famous “tulip crops”.• They are also called pumps.
  6. 6. Location• They’re in a low lying areas.• Andijk and Beemster are one of the most important polders.• Felvopolders (located in Eastern and Southern Flevoland polders):
