OpenStand – Principles for Open Standards and Open Development

  1. OpenStandOpenStand Principles for the modern paradigm for standards development
  2. How It StartedHow It Started August 29, 2012 IEEE, ISOC, IAB, IETF, W3C formally drafted and jointly affirmed the OpenStand Principles in an effort to mobilize ongoing, global support for the application of open, market-driven principles in standards and technology development.
  3. OpenStand:OpenStand: Five Core PrinciplesFive Core Principles Respectful cooperation between standards organizations Whereby each respects the autonomy, integrity, processes and intellectual property rules of the others Adherence to the fundamental parameters of standards development Including due process, broad consensus, transparency, balance and universal openness Collective empowerment to strive to develop standards that are chosen & defined based on technical merit •As judged by the contributed expertise of an open and global experts community •Provide global interoperability, scalability, stability, and resiliency •Enable global competition •Serve as building blocks for further innovation •Contribute to the creation of benefit for humanity Availability of standards specifications •Made globally accessible to all for implementation & deployment •Defined procedures to develop specifications that can be implemented under fair terms •Ensuring a broad affordability of the outcome of the standardization process (openness of input & output) Voluntary adoption by the standards market The success of a standard is determined by the market. 4. OpenStandOpenStand PrinciplesPrinciples Support Global, Market-Driven Standards Development • The economics of global markets and societal needs, fueled by technological innovation, drive global deployment of standards that are built in a consensual manner, from the bottom-up. • These standards help ensure strong integration, interoperability, and increased synergies along the innovation chain across national and regional boundaries.
  5. OpenStandOpenStand PrinciplesPrinciples Establish a paradigm, not just a set of values • Produce standards through a process that is open to an inclusive society of world experts. • Leverage and build upon knowledge to drive innovation.
  6. OpenStandOpenStand PrinciplesPrinciples Fuel strategy, business development and innovation • Standards produced within the modern standards paradigm support:  Collaboration & Consensus  Relationship Building  Business & Technology Development  New & Existing Markets
  7. OpenStandOpenStand PrinciplesPrinciples Embrace and support collaborative communities • Sharing the values of openness, transparency and inclusiveness • Supporting coordination and collaboration among standards development organizations: • Eliminating duplicate efforts that may be shouldered by industry • Simplifying the international standards development landscape • Making standards development more affordable for all stakeholders • Fostering local economic growth and development
  8. Open Standards,Open Standards, Global BenefitsGlobal Benefits a. Address broad market needs b. Embody diverse perspectives c. Leverage proprietary knowledge d. Serve as building blocks for innovation e. Drive interoperability and scalability f. Streamline development and implementation g. Reduce costs h. Open new markets and applications i. Encourage market competition j. Drive global innovation and advancement
  9. OpenStand:OpenStand: A Multifaceted InitiativeA Multifaceted Initiative  Drive global awareness and recognition for standards & standards-development processes developed using a modern, open, market-driven paradigm  Embrace technical innovation via methods that  ensure direct, open participation  produce standards without borders  Advocate for increased openness, transparency and inclusivity  Establish trust via standardization methods that are open and transparent from the beginning  Encourage global cooperation and openness to driving innovation, market growth, and advancing technology for the benefit of humanity  Enable global participation from entities and individuals
  10. Become an OpenStand AdvocateBecome an OpenStand Advocate  Sign Your Name as as show of public support  Display a Site Badge on your website to share with others  Become Personally Active  Embody the principles in a personal/professional capacity  Become informed on key areas of national/international debate and policy making that impact the future of open technology development  Use your voice to help ensure OpenStand Principles are leveraged in public debate, development, and policy making  Help others understand the critical role OpenStand Principles play to ensure the future of technology development  Encourage your organization to support OpenStand

Editor's Notes

  1. Not just to ALIGN these organizations but to mobilize global support for open, market-driven principles in standards and technology development.
  2. We live in a complicated world and a complicated standards and technology collaboration landscape. OpenStand supports inclusive, global, market driven standards that are built from the bottom up – organically – in a consensual, inclusive manner. We believe that this kind of open, inclusive, global, market-driven standards development paradigm will make things BETTER for the world. What is better? We can rattle off a list… but open standards don’t just drive synergies along the innovation chain and across national and regional boundaries  they result in the development of technology that is easier to develop and integrate, that is more interoperable, cost efficient, etc.
  3. As such, the OpenStand principles establish a paradigm for development – not just a set of values. Within this open, inclusive, accessible, paradigm…we build technology on existing knowledge to drive innovation using an open, inclusive society of professionals.
  4. Since then, OpenStand has proven to be a catalyst for communities – helping…. The principles aren’t just applicable to standards, but to technology development as a whole and serve as a rallying point for the open development community. In summary, this is what the principles do:
