The ICRISAT Strategy 2021-25 that was approved by the Board, factors in these concerns and is flexible to adapt to new developments. Special emphasis was on outreach and scaling out through partnerships for greater impact.

The 95th
Governing Board meeting, held virtually,
affirmed ICRISAT’s commitment to a hunger-free
world and its readiness in transitioning to the One
CGIAR and operating efficiently despite COVID-19
constraints. The ICRISAT Strategy 2021-25 that was
approved by the Board, factors in these concerns and is
flexible to adapt to new developments. Special
emphasis was on outreach and scaling out through
partnerships for greater impact.
Dr Jacqueline Hughes, Director General, ICRISAT,
announced that by April 2021 the Institutes’ policies and
procedures (the governance policies are already
approved by the Board) will be reviewed, updated and
aligned to the One CGIAR and international best
practices.
The way forward and lessons learnt
Outgoing Board Chair Dr Paco Sereme updated on the
upcoming changes while presenting the Board Chair
Report. He said the institute has a strong role to play in
Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. Dr Sereme was a member

In sync with government policies and the one

Presenting the Board Vice-Chair Report, Dr S Trilochan
Mohapatra pointed out that this period had been tough
locally and globally, restricting mobility and functioning.
The drylands are fragile and volatile and so ICRISAT’s
work is important, the positioning focus should be on
the contribution of dryland crops to increased farmer
incomes and go beyond climate resilience, he said. “In

ICRISAT Governing Board recently concluded its 98th board meeting, the third virtual board meeting since the Covid-19 pandemic began. The Board deliberated on the pandemic to find ways to shield smallholder farmers from its fallout, prevent worsening of the food security situation in vulnerable regions and to continue the Institute’s mission while keeping its staff safe. The Board also welcomed new members, discussed changes to the Institute’s research structure and contemplated ways to leverage the 2023 International Year of Millets UNGA resolution to improve diets, food and income security in drylands.

Climate Smart Rural Development Synthesis Review

The Rockefeller Foundation

This synthesis review, prepared with financial support from the Rockefeller Foundation, is a companion report to the evaluation of the Foundation’s work on African Agriculture Resilience (AAR) and Carbon for Poverty Reduction (CPR). The synthesis review seeks to identify lessons from a broad range of efforts to build climate resilient agriculture and reduce poverty through carbon markets in Africa. The Rockefeller Foundation and its grantees and partners are interested in learning not only from the Foundation’s work but from the work of others, in order to gain a better understanding of what constitutes successful activities for building climate resilient agriculture and what works and does not work in carbon projects for poverty reduction in the agricultural sector. Agriculture continues to play a key role in the formal economies and in sustaining local livelihoods in Africa. Climate change, in combination with widespread levels of poverty and food insecurity, could potentially have large impacts on the well-being of smallholder farmers and economic growth in the region. Climate resilient agricultural development and carbon markets for poverty reduction are rapidly emerging as key issues for development policy and practice. In ensuring that African agriculture is resilient to the changing climate, it has become imperative to protect livelihoods and to reduce food insecurity. At the same time, the emerging market for carbon may offer new possibilities for agriculture to benefit from land use management practices that sequester carbon, which could, in turn, contribute to poverty reduction. The report first briefly introduces current debates surrounding AAR and CPR. In spite of wide agreement about the need for AAR and CPR efforts in the region, determining the best ways to approach them remains a contentious and uncertain challenge. The report also examines ongoing AAR- and CPR-type work in the region, based on a rapid desk-based screening of existing programs and projects, and on analyses available in the public domain. Tables 1 and 2 summarize reviewed practices, key findings and early lessons for reviewed adaptation and carbon activities, respectively.

Tropical Legumes III

This is fourth bulletin of the quarterly publication of Tropical Legumes III (TL III) project, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and jointly implemented by the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) and the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) in close collaboration with partners in the national agricultural research systems (NARS) of target countries in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. TL III aims to improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in drought-prone areas of the two regions through enhanced productivity and production of grain legumes.

The Bulletin of Tropical Legumes is a quarterly publication of the Tropical Legumes III (TL-III) project, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and jointly implemented by the the International Crops Research Institute in the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) and the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) in close collaboration with partners in the National Agricultural Research Systems (NARS) of the target countries in sub- Saharan Africa and South Asia. TL-III aims to improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in drought- prone areas of the two regions through enhancing grain legumes productivity and production.

The post-COVID recovery offers an opportunity to reverse unsustainable economic trends and build back better, to promote sustainable consumption and production as laid out in SDG 12 and transition to a circular, more resilient and low-carbon economy. Nations are developing a circular economy in the context of the Paris Agreement, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the United Nations Call for Action on Adaption and Resilience. ISO, UNECE and other international standards organizations are developing a number of standards that are essential in supporting the climate agenda; they help adapt to climate change, quantify greenhouse gas emissions and promote the dissemination of good practices in environmental management. A critical element to ensure the achievement of sustainable develop goals is the assessment of conformity and accountability that such goals are being achieved and in a manner consistent with all the SDGs. Although this document reports specifically on conformity assessment for the Circular Economy that is aimed to serve UN SDG12 – Responsible consumption and production, and also UN SDG-13, Climate action, many concepts and methods discussed here will be applicable more broadly in the implementation of all SDGs. International Standards also play a crucial role in underpinning the global economy, and creating trust on all aspects of international trade. In the past, advanced economies have been the main participants in the development of international standards with participants from the transition and developing economies only playing a minor role. This paper emphasizes that issues important to developing and transition economies such as those for social and environmental concerns should be addressed in international standards for them to have broad benefit across all nations and to achieve the SDGs worldwide.

The Charles Renard Analytical Laboratory at ICRISAT has been officially registered with the International Network on Fertilizer Analysis – a network created in December 2020, to build and strengthen the capacity of laboratories in fertilizer analysis and harmonize fertilizer quality standards. Dr Pushpajeet L Choudhari, Manager of the soil laboratory, said that testing serves as a preventive measure to avoid the misuse of fertilizers leading to better soil management.

A delegation from Uzbekistan visited ICRISAT headquarters in India in search of a short-duration second crop suited to arid ecologies that mature before winter. The visit aligns with the Government of Uzbekistan’s efforts to increase agricultural production through double cropping. The visitors were briefed on dryland crop options and expressed interest in academic exchanges and internships based on the Institute’s expertise in genomic technologies and dryland agri-food systems.

ICRISAT’s Gender Research Program recently brought together breeders, value chain stakeholders and social scientists from Mali, Ghana, Burkina Faso and Nigeria to define priority traits of cultivars of sorghum, millet and groundnut during a 4-day workshop. Prior to the workshop, studies were carried out with the national agricultural research systems (NARS) partners in the above countries, to examine and assess the trait preferences of key stakeholders, especially taking into account the specificity of traits with respect to gender-related needs. The results of these studies were presented during the workshop. The expected output is priority trait demands translated into new market-driven and gender-responsive product profiles for the breeding programs at ICRISAT and NARS.

4CAST: New digital tool to enhance farmers’ access to modern varieties

To improve smallholder farmers’ access to new improved varieties, a digital variety catalog tool created by ICRISAT in partnership with public and private institutions was recently launched. Called 4CAST, the tool is a user-friendly data driven platform that gives information about new improved varieties, quality and availability of seeds nationally and regionally. 4CAST, which stands for Digital Tools 4 Cataloguing and Adopting Improved Seed Technologies, also provides stakeholders in seed value chains a digital workflow, decentralized access, real-time tracking of progress, private catalogues as well as seed roadmaps.

A virtual hands-on training program on developing geospatial maps for supporting insurance products using Google Earth Engine and semi-automatic techniques was conducted for participants in Pakistan as part of the project “Strengthening Post-COVID-19 Food Security and Locust Attacks”. The nine participants were from the PARC Agrotech company (PATCO) technical team and crop reporting service teams from Punjab and Sindh in Pakistan. They were introduced to remote sensing and its applications in agriculture. Hands-on training using Google Earth Engine (GEE), Image Processing Software – ERDAS 2015 and various automatic classification techniques was provided along with several applications for using these modern tools.

ICRISAT and HarvestPlus to collaborate on mainstreaming nutrition research an...

ICRISAT and HarvestPlus signed an agreement for scientific and technical collaboration between the two global organizations. Mr Arun Baral, CEO, HarvestPlus, and Dr Jacqueline d’Arros Hughes, Director General, ICRISAT, signed the Memorandum of Understanding, which is made and entered into by IFPRI on behalf of its HarvestPlus Program. On the occasion, Dr Hughes said, After 17 years of fruitful collaboration on biofortification research, we have now decided to elevate this partnership. ICRISAT and HarvestPlus will work together more closely, making available micronutrient-rich varieties, high-quality seed and related technologies to the farming communities and consumers. This will contribute to eliminating micronutrient malnutrition in the drylands.
