1) Pearl millet is an important crop in Africa and South Asia that is vulnerable to downy mildew disease. The hybrid HHB 67 was widely grown but started succumbing to downy mildew with losses of up to 30%. 2) Researchers used marker-assisted backcrossing and conventional breeding to transfer resistance genes from a donor parent into the parental lines of HHB 67. This took 9 years to transfer genes into one parent and 2 years to transfer into the other. 3) Testing of the improved hybrids showed farmers preferred one that had slightly higher yields and resistance to downy mildew, which was then approved for release.
