Research Program
West and Central Africa
Ramadjita Tabo on behalf of WCA Team
ICRISAT- Patancheru, February 4 to 8, 2019
Global Planning Meeting -2019
Program Goal
Improved technologies for sustainably increasing agricultural productivity,
achieving food and nutritional security and enhancing income of smallholder
farmers in the WCA region.
Crop Improvement (Pearl Millet)
• Developing hybrid parents
research consortium for cereals
in West Africa
• Accelerating genetic gain for
yield, resistance and nutritional
traits for our focus crops in
West Africa
• Keeping the product pipeline
full based on market demand
and consumer preferences in
West Africa
Crop Improvement (Sorghum)
• Dual-purpose sorghum for livestock
nutrition and phenotyping
• Hybrids: locally adapted material -
Regional heterotic groups and molecular
markers
• Nutrition (Iron and zinc contents and
bioavailability; Phytates, proteins)
• Modeling and climate agriculture services
to define ideotypes and TPEs for better
adaptation to drought and other stresses
• Seed system strengthening - targeting
seed value chain actors and integrating
diagnostic marker for seed purity testing
Crop Improvement (Groundnut)
• Modernizing the breeding program
o Fine-tuning of product concepts (PCs) in partnership with NARS
o Strengthening digital data collection and storage
o Mechanizing operations and improving seed processing/storage
facilities
• Strengthening product discovery and delivery
o Scaling up the number of new population for target PCs and traits
(yield, oil, drought tolerance, disease resistance), and speeding up
the generation advancement process
o Improving phenotyping and genotyping facilities
o Strengthening partnership with NARS for performance evaluation of
advanced varieties through ICRISAT product placement team
o Strengthening groundnut seed system to enhance availability of
seed for improved varieties and speed up variety turn over
Crop Improvement (Genebank and Physiology)
• Seed distribution, training, germplasm
collection and acquisition
• Improve access and utilization of
germplasm by ICRISAT breeders and
NARS partners
• Continue upgrading the regional
genebank facilities and implementing
standard operation procedures
• Measurement of water requirement and
investigating the root system under pre
and post flowering drought stress in
lysimeter conditions
Integrated Crop Management
• Diversifying farming systems and increasing biodiversity to
maintain and improve productivity and restore ecosystem services
in resilient landscapes
• Climate-resilient agricultural production systems through promoting
climate-smart agriculture at all scales (from community to
subnational to national levels)
o Development of climate-smart villages in Niger
o Integrated soil-water-energy system as a climate-smart agro-
Sylvo-pastoral production model in Cinzana, Mali
o Watershed management approach consists of managing land
and water resources, community engagement in resource use
planning, installation and management of water lifting
structures
Integrated Crop Management
Soil/ water/crop and nutrient
management for increased productivity:
tillage practices, microdosing
application, crop residue and manure

Integrated Crop Management
Discovery of Millet head miner egg parasitoids
and fall armyworm egg parasitoids
• Platform for discovery and delivery of biorationals for controlling
insect pests of sorghum and pearl millet
Development of mass rearing
technique for the parasitoids

Businesses for production and
commercialization of beneficial
• Identifying the underlying factors hindering or facilitating the
adoption, adaptation and/or rejection of recommended released
varieties and accompanying management practices
• Analyzing drivers of transformational changes to identity key factors
for creating enabling institutional environment for effective uptake of
technologies
Policy and Impact

• Scaling out and up of best bet sorghum and millet technologies using
Farmer Field School (FFS), Innovation Platform (IP), warrantage etc.
• Improving household nutritive food consumption through sustainable
utilization of improved varieties and good agronomic practices (TAAT)
• Developing a business model to facilitate the sustainable uptake and up-
scaling of weather and climate information services (WCIS) as prominent
agricultural input”
• Developing climate-smart value chains and landscapes for increased
resilient livelihood in West Africa
• Digital mechanisms to de-risk value chains, promote smallholder financing
and safe market inclusion; Mainstreaming of earth observation, IoT and AI
innovation for improved tactical decision making in smallholder agriculture
System analysis
Science - policy interface processes for science-informed
decision making regarding agriculture and climate change
plans and policies
• Analyzing the enabling policy environment for CSA, food
security and improved diets in West Africa
• Analyzing the role of national science-policy dialogue
platforms on the development of national policy instruments
on climate change and CSA
• Ex-ante evaluation for agriculture and CSA options in national
agricultural development policy instruments (e.g. nationally
determined contributions, and national agricultural investment
plans)
Policy and Impact
Governance studies to examine institutions interactions
across scale under climate change context.
Enabling institutions and policies for sustainable climate
change governance in agriculture
Building the capacity of stakeholder institutions in the
development and implementation of a climate change and
CSA-related policy instruments
Providing technical assistance for the development of a
coordination mechanism and governance structure for the
monitoring and implementation of a national climate change
and CSA-related policy instruments
