Gender equity at workplace key to organizational success International Women’s Day 2019 @ ICRISAT Fostering gender diversity and inclusion at the workplace, and creating frameworks to support women in science was the focus of Women’s Day special celebrations at ICRISAT-India on 8 March. A diverse panel of veterans in research, gender equity, policy and human resources debated on bridging the gender divide. The panelists emphasized the need for workplaces to be gender diverse. They also narrated anecdotes and quoted data to convey what a gender-neutral workforce could mean for organizations like ICRISAT and the society at large. Addressing subtle but pervasive gender bias can be a challenge, Ms Fiona Bourdin-Farrell, Director, Human Resources Services, said during a talk on unconscious gender bias in workplaces. The presentation showed that with awareness and organizational drive to create better workplaces such biases can be corrected. Rural innovators remain the foundation of our work Dr R Padmaja, Senior Scientist, Gender Research, ICRISAT If we talk about innovation, trailblazers contributing to gender equality are the rural women, men, boys and girls living in fragile environments of the semi-arid tropics. As our key stakeholders, they are constantly challenged to innovate in their homes, communities and fields. They help us understand what we need to bring change. This understanding remains the foundation of our work. As we understand better the landscape where we aim to bring gender transformative change, we begin to engage diverse audiences, think outside the box, establish new research partnerships and expand the horizons of gender research. We are also inspired by other gender research to identify research gaps, build strategic collaborations, and incubate/sustain innovators. I think there are many opportunities to contribute to the building of gender- equitable agricultural innovations. It starts with continually disrupting exclusion and transforming our technical interventions and knowledge. Intersectionality is another area that offers great potential. Many research initiatives focus on empowering women in their productive role and as members, or even leaders, of community groups (e.g. self-help groups). While this has led to their empowerment in public space, it remains to be seen whether it translates into improved household dynamics and improved quality of life.
