Farmer’s preferred groundnut varieties to enhance production and profitability of groundnut in Odisha state

  1. January 2018 Farmer’s preferred groundnut varieties to enhance production and profitability of groundnut in Odisha state About ICRISAT: www.icrisat.org ICRISAT’s scientific information: http://EXPLOREit.icrisat.org Groundnut is an important crop in Odisha, cultivated in 184,000 ha in Kharif and 328,000 ha in rabi season during 2015-16. World over, it has been proven that varietal technologies will enhance the production and profitability of groundnut cultivation. Through financial assistance from IFAD, OFID, BMGF and the current project supported by DoA of Odisha state, ICRISAT in partnership with OTELP and OUAT has developed and released farmer’s preferred groundnut varieties in Odisha and promoting adoption of these varieties through strengthening seed systems, adoption of varieties and improved technologies, mechanization, and capacity building. Varietal needs of Odisha state: High yielding, drought tolerant and early maturing varieties with fresh seed dormancy and resistance to foliar fungal diseases are primary requirements of the state. Therefore, to fulfill the state needs, three new groundnut varieties i.e. ICGV 00351, ICGV 02266 and ICGV 07222 were identified in the project and are in the pipeline for release. The development, testing on-station and on-farm is product of collaboration between Odisha University of Agriculture & Technology (OUA&T) and International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics, Patancheru (ICRISAT). Earlier Devi (ICGV 91114) was released and popularized in the state. Variety: ICGV 00351 Identified as superior performer in farmer participatory varietal selection trials (FPVST) conducted in Odisha state Parentage: [ICGV 87290 × ICGV 87846] Duration (Days): 100-105 Season: Kharif and rabi Pod yield: Rainfed- 2300 Kg/ha (Based on three years AICRP-G trials) Irrigated- 2806 Kg/ha (Based on three years AICRP-G trials) Special features: • Tolerant to Drought. Suitable replacement for ICGV 91114 (Devi) which was released in Odisha in 2007. • Moderately resistance to rust and late leaf spot diseases • Shelling outturn: 71% • Oil content: 51% The yield increase was found to be 14.4% and 25.8% over check varieties VRI Gn 6 and TMV Gn 13, respectively under rainfed condition whereas it was 16.5 and 23.7% over the checks under irrigated condition. Variety: ICGV 02266 Parentage: [ICGV 94143 × ICGV 94136] Duration (Days): 125-131 Pod yield: 2234 Kg/ha (Based on three years AICRP-G trials) Yield potential of 4167 Kg/ha was also recorded under good management practices Season: Rabi- Summer Special features: • Higher pod and fodder yield (Dual purpose variety) • Drought tolerance • Suitable for Rabi-Summer season • Bold Kernels (Preferred for confectionery purpose) • Shelling Outturn: 72% • Oil content: 50% ICGV 02266 performed superior to the best check variety “TAG 24” with 21.3 and 27.4 % advantage for pod and seeds yield, respectively during last two years. A total of 100 minikits being carryout in collaboration with OUA&T during 2017. The variety is expected to be released for cultivation in Odisha state during 2018. Variety: ICGV 07222 Parentage: [(ICGV-92069 x ICGV-93184) SIL-4 x (ICGS-44 x ICGS-76)] Duration (Days): 110-115 Season: Rabi-summer Pod yield: 3064 Kg/ha (Based on three years AICRP-G trials) Special features: • Tolerant to Drought • Identified for rabi-summer season cultivation • Shelling outturn: 67% • Oil content: 51% Pod yield increment up to 50 % was recorded over best zonal checks in AICRP-G trials during last three years Acknowledgements (a) Government of Odisha and RKVY cell for providing funding for the project from 2015 onwards; and before 2014 (b) IFAD (International Fund for Agriculture Development) for testing and release of Devi (ICGV 91114) and promoting adoption (c) OFID (OPEC Fund for International Development) for development and testing of groundnut varieties and (d) BMGF (Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation) for promoting adoption of Devi.
