Development of management options in crop livestock integration

  1. To address the challenges of quantity, quality and dry season feeding of animals using a novel technology of chopping in Niger. • baCkground 1. To understand the existing practices in dry season sheep fattening. 2. To compare effect of chopping of stovers on the weight gains during dry season feeding vis- a vis farmer practice. • objeCtives Objective 1: 30 animal trial for 56 days in 2014, gender disag- gregated data for animal husbandry practices particularly on feeding. Objective 2: Comparison of chopped two improved sorghum varieties vs farmer practice with 30 animals for 65 days in 2015 Samples analyzed: proximate analysis in INRAN, NIRS in ILRI India. • methodology For objective 2: In 2014 trial on two improved sorghum varieties, agronomic and fodder quality traits recorded. In 2015, Stover utilized for chopping experiment. For both experiments data was recorded for body weight, dry matter intake and crude protein intake and feed conversation ratio. • aCtivities • To make profit, farmer have to optimize the length of ownership. • Women farmers spend more than men on buying feed for fattening sheep • 3/5 of women and 3/6 of men give name to their animals for identification • Women (18.18 %) take their animals to grazing for 6 to 8 hours/day. • results and main aChievements • Current partnerships and future engagements for out sCaling • Fattening sheep for 3 months is profitable. • Chopping reduced the feed wastage , through mechaniza- tion will reduce drudgery. • ConClusions • Implemented along with national partners, international organisations. • Out scaling of study by blogging or writing in a popular journal or scientific journal.
