Estranged examination

  1. 1. AN INTRODUCTION Estranged is an over nine minutes song, which was written in 1994 by the leader singer of the American hard rock band Guns n‟ Roses and released on their last album with the original lineup (Use Your Illusion II). The main theme is the separation from a loved person. The song, in fact, is about the intense emotional upheaval that Axl Rose had been through in that period, as a consequence of the painful divorce from his wife. All the sorrows and heartache in which he was going through are summed up in this epic rock masterpiece. • tense and their function, irregular verbs, grammar modals, comparatives and superlatives, pg.2 expressions of preference, determiners • words and their meaning, phrasal verbs, short vocabulary forms, colloquialisms, idioms pg.3 • particularity and rules of pronunciation, pronunciation ellipses, weak forms, omophones and pg.4 graphonoms
  2. 2. Estranged – Guns n‟ Roses ( I‟m very dubious about this…)When you‟re talkin‟ to yourself [Present Continuous – in this case express an activity in a not specified time]And nobody‟s home [zero conditional – express a resultYou can fool yourself that is always true for this condition]You came in this world aloneSo nobody ever told you babyHow it was gonna be [Past Continuous - (“it was going to” ) express an activity that was in progress at a particular time in the past]So what will happen to us baby [Simple Future - express a future action]Guess we‟ll have to wait and see [have to - express a necessity to do a specified action]Old at heart but I‟m only 28And I‟m much too young [determiner: much too – is used in expressions that precede the adjective, and express the maximum quantity]To let love break my heartYoung at heart but it‟s getting much too late [Present Continuous - express an activity that is in progress at the moment of speaking]To find ourselves so far apartI don‟t know how you‟re supposedTo find me latelyAnd what more could you ask from me [(Modal) could – show a past opportunity that was not realized]How could you say that [(modal) could - used to make a question that express the astonishment for an action that someone did or is doing]I never needed youWhen you took everything [Past Simple - express an activity or situation that started in the past and ended in the past at a particular time]Said you took everything from meYoung at heart and it gets so hard to waitWhen no one I know can seem to help me know [(modal) can: in this case shows impossibility because it’s preceded by “no one”] ( I‟m very dubious about this…)Old at heart but I musn‟t hesitateIf I‟m to find my own way out [zero conditional – express a result that is always true for this condition]When I found out all the reasonsMaybe I‟ll find another wayFind another dayWith all the changing season of my lifeMaybe I‟ll get it right next timeAnd now that you‟ve been broken down [Present Perfect Passive - emphasizes a previous event that began in the past and whose consequences have implications for the present]Got your head out of the cloudsYou‟re back down on the groundAnd you don‟t talk so loudAnd you don‟t walk so proudAnymore and what forWell I jumped into the riverToo many times to make it home [(determiner) too many times - provide information about the quantity of a noun, in this case express a big quantity]I‟m out here on my own and drifting all aloneIf it doesn‟t show give it timeTo read between the lines [infinitive of purpose – indicates the goal of the action]„Cause I see the storm is getting closerAnd the waves they get so high [“they” in this case is surplus because we already know the subject]Seems everything we‟ve ever known‟s here [Past perfect - is used to talk about an activity that was completed in the past]Why must it drift away and die [(modal) must- indicate a necessity that you cannot stop]I‟ll never find anyone to replace youGuess I‟ll have to make it thru this timeWithout youI knew the storm was getting closerAnd all my friends said I was highBut everything we‟ve ever known‟s hereI never wanted it to die

  5. 5. …and in the end, a not required comment to the song that I did just for my pleasureEven if it is a very sad song, I think it’s one of the best ever written because anyone can identify his self in it. Everyone, alleast one time in life, has made mistakes and is gone through that felling of abandonment due to the separation fromsomeone in whom you really cared (if you didn’t probably you’re not human). I like everything of this song. Each word of thelyric is amazing because you can find different meanings every time you read it. Axl’s interpretation is also awesome. Maybeyou could say he’s a badass, and you’re probably right, but when it comes to write good music he’s a genius. I love especiallythe way he whisper at the start of the song, because he gives you the impression that he’s standing alone in a desert roomand has no one to talk with. The music is also incredible. It has so many different riffs which skip from rock to blues passingthrough classics and which are a metaphor of the “changing seasons of life”. For all these reasons I could listen to this songto the end of time and never get sick of it.
