Application services in Private Clouds - IBM Smarter Business 2013

Published on

Today's infrastructure blends in house development with off the shelf products and in environments where scalability has never been more relevant. Rapid deployments and provisioning of new systems is likewise paramount to meet future challenges quickly and efficiently. The Pure Application System enables customers to meet the dynamic needs of their mixed environments easily and efficiently supporting the blended makeup that is reality for todays IT demands. Come and learn how IBM can enable
your environment to support your specific application services in a private cloud hosted on Pure! Presenter: Geir Sjurstedt, partner director Ascendant.

  5. 5. To solve critical customer requirements ACCELERATE SIMPLIFY CLOUD new applications, big data and analytics application platforms and infrastructure • Rapid Deployments • Rapid Provisioning • Simple change management • Up and running in 4 hours2 IMPROVE IT EFFICIENCY by simplifying the IT lifecycle • Spend real time developing insetad of managing infrastructure 1Based * upon testing of the IBM PureApplication System W1500-192 and W1700-608 deploying a single Virtual Application Pattern consisting of 2 WAS VMs, a DB2 VM, and updating the Elastic Load Balancer (ELB). The WAS VMs were allocated 4 vCPUs, 4 GB of memory and 12 GB of disk while the DB2 VM was allocated 8 vCPUs, 6 GB of memory and two virtual disks of 12 GB and 4 GB. 2Based upon testing of the IBM PureApplication System W1500-96 and W1700-608 with time measured from powering on the system to when it is ready to support application deployments 3IBM Competitive Project Office analysis of PureApplication System versus do-it-yourself (DIY) approach. DIY used nine blades (144 cores). IBM PureApplication System used three nodes (96 cores). Each system has the capacity to run 72 workloads, where each workload can sustain a peak throughput of 1,720 page elements per second © 2013 IBM Corporation
  6. 6. Deploy anywhere Enterprise data center Accelerate adoption with integrated systems Enterprise Managed private cloud Evolve existing infrastructure to cloud Enterprise Hosted private cloud Shared cloud services Immediate access to a managed platform with flexible cost Workload Portability Deploy to SmarCloud Foundation, PureSystems or SmartCloud Services * © 2013 IBM Corporation
  7. 7. Gartner confirms our strategy and leadership position "IBM PureApplication System, with ISV and channel partner engagement, enables IBM to raise the bar on the level of automation … in fabric-based infrastructures that other vendors have not fully addressed“7 "The Patterns of Expertise technology enables faster deployment of application and application infrastructure as well as integrated monitoring and management and automated, policy-driven elasticity and failover.“8 “PureFlex System can help consolidate and unify heterogeneous ensembles of IBM systems (Power and/or x86), hypervisors and OSs.” 9 * © 2013 IBM Corporation
  8. 8. What’s Inside? ● ● ● ● ● ● * High end rack of hardware Multiple configuration types Orchestration Engine Elastic IP balancing Scaling engines Monitoring © 2013 IBM Corporation
  9. 9. Patterns: Support anything reliably and consistently What the business wants… Patterns: ● Topology ● Application ● Custom OS ● Script Packages * What’s required… What a pattern automates… • Pre-defined architecture of an application or Cloud service • Captures best practices for complex tasks • Optimized into a deployable form for private or public cloud • Repeatable deployment with full lifecycle management © 2013 IBM Corporation
  10. 10. Two types of Patterns Virtual Application Pattern ● ● ● ● ● ● Application Focused JaveEE patern Simple to deploy Simple to update Auto scales ○ policy options All infrastructure modelling is automatic Virtual System Pattern ● ● ● * Topology Focused Specify layout ○ DB ○ WebServers ○ Anything Script Packages ○ Custom scripts for post initialization steps © 2013 IBM Corporation
  11. 11. Pattern Catalog ● Catalog of Patterns ○ Like a marketplace ● Similar to installing an app ○ adds new Pure functionality ● The list is growing every day ● Some patterns are simple ● DB WebLogic GlassFish Some patterns involve large topologies SharePoint TomCat Node.JS * © 2013 IBM Corporation
  12. 12. Control the patterns ● Now use the patterns ● Combine to make your own new template GlassFish Node.JS ● Clone existing pieces ○ Extend through script packages ● Reuse or create your own ● Finally .. Publish and use it My Pattern * © 2013 IBM Corporation
  13. 13. Pattern usage ● Select a pattern[s] ● Now instantiate it ○ Answer a few questions ● Your new instance is fully controlled from PureAS WebLogic DB GlassFish SharePoint TomCat Node.JS * My Pattern © 2013 IBM Corporation
  14. 14. Pattern Rollout ● At Deployment time the pattern is examined ● The topology is dynamically constructed ● PureAS spins up instances according to the pattern ● Software deploymens occur on the fly Virtual Instaces Inside PureAS ● Node.JS Node.JS GlassFish Node GlassFish Node In a few minutes your instance is up and running Services Cluster HADR DB2 * My Pattern DB2 Instance of My Pattern © 2013 IBM Corporation
  15. 15. Versioning your patterns ● Every part of the pattern can be versioned ○ pure-cli ● Each sub pattern and the whole can be controlled ● Tag your new version and deploy it back to pure ● Even your VCS could be a pattern stored inside of PureAS ● GlassFish Node.JS Finally, associate your code with versioned pattern! My Pattern * © 2013 IBM Corporation
  16. 16. Instance Management ● Instance is managed wholistically or per VM ● Stop/Pause/Start the whole instance ○ stops all VMs ● Find problems and monitor instance ● Node.JS Node.JS GlassFish Node GlassFish Node Perform maintenance ○ deployments ○ upgrades ○ patches Services Cluster HADR DB2 DB2 Instance of My Pattern * © 2013 IBM Corporation
  17. 17. ISVs are seeing value in delivering their own solutions as patterns PriceLenz™ revenue maximization through precise marketing and efficient sales Customer need: • Boost revenues through laser-sharp marketing and optimal sales • Have freedom of deployment options Provider need: Slashing deployment time from 3 weeks to 8 minutes • Effectively and quickly deploy the PriceLenz solution to numerous customers around the world while maintaining a high level of quality The solution: “PureSystems provides benefits that are more than the sum of the parts... PureSystems is the most advanced integrated cloud solution in the market.” Panos Konstantinidis Co-founder and business strategy director OneTree Solutions * • PriceLenz virtualized solution deployable as a pattern to private and public clouds: • IBM Workload Deployer • IBM PureApplication System • IBM PureFlex System • IBM SmartCloud Application Services ©© 2013 IBM Corporation 2013 IBM Corporation
