  1. 1. Christianity Explored CE: “Why did Jesus come?” Questions:  If God is a good God why does he allow so much suffering?  How can a loving God send anyone to hell?
  2. 2. Luke 19:10“For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost." Luke 19:10 (NIV)
  3. 3. Why Did Jesus Come? Jesus came because we are “lost”  What belongs to God has wandered away from him  We are estranged from God  God came looking for us in Jesus
  4. 4. Why Did Jesus Come? Our Problem: Sin  Attitude of rebellion against God  God-defying selfishness  Reality of our being  Root cause of our problems
  5. 5. Why Did Jesus Come? Our Problem: Sin  Condition of our being human – through Adam’s sin we’ve all been incorporated into his rebellion  Choice of sin – each one personally responsible for their own personal rebellion
  6. 6. Why Did Jesus Come?Our Problem: Sin“…for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, … Romans 3:23 (NIV)
  7. 7. How the Bible Views Sin Transgression of the law (Deut. 6:24-25) Breach of the covenant (Duet. 29:19-21) Violation of God’s nature (Lev. 11:45) Miss the mark (Mark 1:5) Step across the line (Rom 4:15)
  8. 8. Consequences of Sin Barrier between us and God, others, and ourselves Enslaved by sin – entrapped by our selfishness Helplessness and hopelessness apart from God
  9. 9. Consequences of Sin Spiritual blindness Moral corruption Guilt Death Eternal Separation from God--Hell
  10. 10. The Questions If God is a good God why does he allow so much suffering? How can a loving God send anyone to hell?
  11. 11. The Questions--Suffering If God is a good God why does he allow so much suffering?
  12. 12. The Questions--Suffering God created us for love Love involves a free choice We’ve rebelled (sinned) against God We cause pain and suffering because of our sin
  13. 13. The Questions--Suffering Our sin has affected EVERYTHING, even creation God’s universe has been marred by our sin The world is NOT as God intended
  14. 14. The Questions--Suffering God himself subjected himself to pain and suffering because of love Our sin breaks God’s heart Jesus Christ—God in flesh—endured pain and suffering on our behalf
  15. 15. The Questions--Hell How can a loving God send anyone to hell?
  16. 16. The Questions--Hell Presupposed God is NOT loving or fair (unjust) Hell is NOT for pretty good people who just didn’t believe the right things…
  17. 17. The Questions--Hell Hell is for people who choose to rebel against God and put themselves at the center of their universe Persist in God-defying rebellion and blatant defiance of God
