Fathers of Technology
1. Father's of Technology Series -
Willard Boyle and George E.
Smith
In 1969, while at Bell
Laboratories, Willard Boyle and
George E. Smith invented a CCD
or a charge-coupled device. This
CCD changes images into digital
data immediately and so
without the CCD there would
be no digital camera. While
Steven Sasson created the first
digital camera at Eastman
Kodak, he couldn’t have done it
without using the CCD image
sensor developed by Mr. Boyle
and Mr. Smith.
