8. Underbody coating (UBC)

• The purpose of UBC is to reduce noise and protect
the underbody against environmental influences
• Typical weight of UBC without lightweight filler is
around 8 kg per car
• During storage, pumping, and spray application
pressures up to 350 bar (5076 psi) can occur
• The UBC ingredients need to be resistant to
pressure as well as plasticizers like DINP
• The same conditions apply to seam sealants

• If added in higher amounts, glass bubbles fail to
meet the physical elasticity needed for sealants
• Automation lines cause shear stress resulting in
destroyed glass bubbles and wear on equipment
• Current thermoplastic microspheres fail during high
pressure, resulting in increased density and poor
surface appearance
